The Weekenders, April 4-6 Events for Austin Families

Can you say busy weekend? Man, there is just too much to list this weekend! In addition to what’s listed here, there are the staple weekend events going on- Storytime at Book People, Ruta Maya Sunday Kid’s Show…. plenty to keep you entertained in Austin, Texas!

MLK Commemoration Event- True to Dr. King’s legacy, all of the community is invited. Participants can look forward to a procession including City officials, a special program, music, and passes given to the first 500 guests for free food and games at the Millennium Complex. FREE! The Louisiana Swamp Thing and Crawfish Festival- It’s all about the food and the music! This popular Louisiana themed event features the best in Louisiana cuisine prepared by concessionaires from Louisiana and Texas. Enjoy an extensive menu of Cajun seafood. The highlight of the show is 6000 pounds of jumbo crawfish and other bayou favorites. Enjoy dancers, juju mamas, and lots of beads and tokens. Music includes Cajun, Zydeco, Funk, Brass Bands, Blues, Rock, & Jazz . Saturday, 10:00am-10:30pm, 18th and Congress, across from the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum.

Tee Shirt Design at Moxie and the Compound- Bring a plain white t-shirt, a favorite picture, drawing, saying or family slogan and they will print it for you! Fun and easy activity for the kids! Saturday, 11:00am-2:00pm. Snacks and juice provided, $15.00.

Crocodile Run- This event is a 1K family fun run with The Biscuit Brothers performing a concert at the Paramount Theatre immediately following the run for all participants. Each runner will receive a prize for finishing. $15, kicks off at 10:00am on Saturday at 7th and Congress.

KAB Clean Sweep- Join KAB and thousands of volunteers for our BIGGEST event of the year! Organize your own cleanup or join an existing one and then come together for a huge volunteer party, which includes free lunch, live music, kid’s activities, green art, a dance performance and door prizes. Saturday, 9:00am- 11:00am cleanup, 11:30-1:30 party. Free t-shirt for every volunteer. FREE!

Urban Music Fest- Featuring Phillip Martin, After 7, Trey Songz and Jeffrey Osborne. Inflatable slides, face painting, a carnival and an obstacle course to entertain the kids, food and craft vendors will be available as well. Tickets $30 at the gate, kids 12 and under free. Saturday, gates open at 11:00 and first band goes on at noon. Auditorium Shores, Riverside.

Oak Hill World’s Fair- A spectacular, community building, family fun-filled festival, featuring music by Tribe 13 & Floyd Domino. There will be a diverse assortment of entertainers, vendors, food, interactive exhibits, and activities. In addition, the Oak Hill World’s Fair will feature the debut of Convict Sledding Hill – the area’s first year-round snow sledding experience! The fair marks the debut of Pyro-palooza, which will culminate in a huge fireworks display. There will be classic cars, along with many other quirky, creative and educational events, attractions and competitions that exemplify that special Oak Hill state of mind. $3 Adults, 12 and under free. Saturday, Noon- 10:00pm. Fire Lake, on Fitzhugh Rd. off Hwy. 290 West.

County Fair/ Pioneer Pastimes- What did they do for fun? Spend an afternoon at Pioneer Farms and find the answer to that question. We’ll have live music, dancing, and games all afternoon. Come join in all the fun! Saturday, 1:00pm-5:00pm. Tickets $8 child/$10 adult. Pioneer Farms, 10621 Pioneer Farms Drive.

Heritage Artisans- See what it took to tame this wild land. Pioneers took off to the wilderness to carve out their own little world. Once they paved the way, they dragged civilization along in their wake. Take a look at the “modern” conveniences that they lived with day to day. Demonstrations of daily life on the rural prairies of Central Texas during the 1800’s. Sunday, 1:00pm-5:00pm; Tickets $6 child/$8 adult. Pioneer Farms, 10621 Pioneer Farms Drive.

The Grind- This event will feature professional wake boarders competing in a rail jam for major awards, along with live music by over 6 alternative rock bands, great food, graphite artist exhibits, custom boat accessories by numerous vendors, wakeboard accessories, wakeboard instructional sessions, a showcase of the latest wake board boats, and much more. We will also have Skateboarding competitions by pro athletes, skateboarding gear, and a street bike show. All ages, $10 general admission, 5 and under free. Sunday, 11:00am-10:00pm, MLK and Congress Ave.

Just For Mom:

Saturday is Cleanup Day- not only in Austin, but also in the suburb of Pflugerville. It’s time to empty the garage out- unused paint, chemicals, tires, batteries. Yes, clean that baby out good and then haul your butt down to Joi de Vie to cleanup yourself as well. A hair cut and color, manicure, pedicure… maybe a massage. After all, cleaning up is hard work, but an essential process in life. They have a special offer ($10 off with booking done today) on their website!

  1. Clean up day is the best day in Austin. I really enjoy seeing everyone working together to make the Earth a little better.
