Future Craft Collective
Ever since I launched LiveMom.com, I’ve met some really talented Austinites. People who create, people who contribute in a way that truly makes a difference. Many of these incredible women are artists- they sew and knit and paint, among other things. They are creative souls and because of them, I’ve learned to value the homemade more than the mass market, made in China way of life. I’m looking for gifts for family and friends and instead of heading to my local Target or Bath and Body Works, I’m heading out and hitting up local artisans for their handmade, homemade items. While searching for a birthday gift for a friend, I found Ramonster and was lead the Future Craft Collective, sewing classes for children. I was so impressed and thought that it might be a good thing to share with the LiveMom community. Here’s a little bit about the program:
The future craft collective is about inspiring children to get crafty, to create beauty, while simultaneously teaching them ways of minimizing our impact on this earth. It’s about understanding ways of recycling, reducing, reusing, and at the same time, making some really cool stuff. Throughout the craft sessions, kids will discover ways to create a world in which the belief in handmade looms larger than the messages of the marketing machine. In this era of relentless advertising and planned obsolescence, the time has come to infuse our children with our own messages of creative living and sustainability. This message too can save a kid from a lifetime of seeking contentment through consumption. The future craft collective wants kids to understand the thrill of making it themselves. We want them to look at the used goods all around them not as trash, or as items to be tossed in the recycling bin, but rather as raw materials in their crafty creative pursuits, thereby allowing them to experience the innovative feeling of instilling new life into old objects.
Isn’t that one cool Austin mom? She has kids, she creates amazing clothes, she teaches our kids how to not seek contentment through consumption!! This is so needed for my nine year old! Check out the Future Craft Collective for more information and for schedules. She is also offering Summer Camp. Be sure to hurry, space is limited.

ETSY.COM is also a real great way to shop hand-made. My husband has been a seller for almost a year and I buy frequently from there for birthday and christmas presents. They also have a locator option for shopping in austin or somewhere specific. This alows a greener way of shopping since it’s local delivery. Nothing but crafting goodness:)
