The Weekenders, May 23-26 Events for Austin Families

Well folks, I thought there would be more going on in Austin over Memorial day weekend. For some reason I was thinking there would be lots of festivals and stuff to entertain the kids, but I wasn’t able to find much happening. Maybe everyone is heading out of town for the long weekend? Have I missed any events that you are planning on going to? If so, just leave a comment and tell us what you’re doing this weekend.

Austin Wine Festival- A uniquely Austin 3-day Texas wine celebration. Imagine an entire grassy acre of music, food, fun and vino bliss. While you taste the splendor of the fruits of our wineries’ labors, your kids will enjoy our extravaganzas such as balloon artists and face painting, plus outdoor laser tag and a mobile video game theater by Games2U! Saturday, 3:00- 9:00p.m. Sunday, 1:00- 9:00 p.m. and Monday, 1:00 – 6:00 p.m. The Domain (not directly in the shopping center, but in a grassy area next to it) Braker and Mopac.

Second Annual Manor Chip Festival- Featuring a 5K run, chocolate chip cookie bake-off, salsa and chip contest, chow chip bingo and a chip eating contest! This year’s event will also have a double land slide, a bungee run, a full petting zoo with pony rides, birds of prey and the Mr. Slither program from Capital of Texas Zoo. Saturday, 10:00 a.m- 4:00 p.m. FREE!! Manor New Tech High, 10323 Hwy. 290E.

Close Assault: 1944- Watch a recreation of an attack on a German strong-point, check out tanks, jeeps and armored fighting vehicles, watch blank weapons firing demonstrations, tour the museum and learn about uniforms of the American GI. Adults need a photo I.D. to enter. Saturday, 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. and Sunday, 11:00 a.m. only. FREE!! Camp Mabry, Mopac and 35th Street.

Flores de Mayo- Come and celebrate the Flowers of May on the Texas State Capitol Grounds. Watch young children in angelic costumes and Reinas (queens) garbed in beautiful gowns. A catered dinner will be served after at the McBeth Recreation Center near Zilker Park for only $4.00, children 2 and under are free. FREE!! Saturday, 2:00- 5:00 p.m. State Capitol south steps.


Community Unity- Community Unity is being sponsored by the Gardner Group at Keller Williams. The FREE event will feature a super inflatable slide, face painting, balloon artists, family photos, an Amy’s Ice Cream eating contest, sac races, and amazing prize giveaways. Saturday, 11:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m. at Dittmar Park, 1009 W. Dittmar.

Pflugerville Children’s Day- A Silent Auction will be held throughout the day!! There will be sack races, egg relay, water balloon toss and many more games. Caricatures, face painting, balloon artists, moon walk, and music will also be part of the day. For an extra treat there will be a dunking booth and a whip cream pie toss with local celebrities, Pflugerville teachers and athletes ready to meet the challenge. FREE!! Saturday, 8:00a.m.- 5:00p.m. El Rincon Mexican Restaurant, Pecan Street, Pflugerville.

Memorial Day Concert and Casino Night- Come join the party! The evening begins with a free concert from the Watchband outside the WB Community Center from 3-5pm. Along with the entertainment; the MUD will be selling hotdogs, chips, popcorn, and drinks. Afterwards, the kids go home for an evening of gaming from 6-9 p.m. for all of our adult residents as the MUD transforms the Community Center into a casino with professional tables and dealers. Must be 21 to attend. IDs will be checked at the door. Saturday, 3:00 – 9:00 p.m. Wells Branch Community Center, 3000 Shoreline Dr.
