Personally I think the teachers have come to expect these end of the year gifts and it's more of a requiremnt now. It makes me upset and so I just write a personal note to all of them at the end of the year thanking them for their hard work and include my children in on the note writing too.

If one of my kids has had a really great teacher, we try to spoil them throughout the year. Keeps the element of surprise there and makes them feel really good because they didn't expect it.
