Movie Ratings
Many times, I struggle with what to and what not to allow my children to watch either on television or at the movies. For my toddler, Baby Einstein and Sesame Street are no-brainers- they’re educational, funny and not filled with sex and violence. My nine year old’s choice of programming is a much more delicate matter. I allow him to watch most PG-13 movies now, but am still hesitant about R rated movies. Soon enough, it will get to a point when I have to start making tough decisions about what movies are age appropriate for a pre-schoole girl. Not looking forward to those days!! I can certainly relate to Lana on this matter. Here’s what she has to say:
Has anyone seen Dark Knight? My 6 year old wants to see this movie so badly, but I think it might be a little too much for a kid his age. Can anyone help and let me know if it’s an appropriate movie for him? I generally try to watch something like this before he does but that’s not possible if it’s in the theaters. He’s getting to a point where he’s outgrowing movies that seem to be in his age range. I’m not quite ready to let him watch the more violent movies that he’s wanting to watch. Are the ratings really reliable or is it alright for a younger child to watch movies that are rated for older kids?

While walking out of the Dark Knight on Monday I saw a few young kids in line for the next showing. I was a bit shocked that their parents were bringing them. Yes there’s the requisite violence but the violence can also be very dark & twisted & potentially nightmare provoking. It’s a great movie but in no way is it similar to the Batman TV show full of “Bam!”s and “Pow!”s after every punch. Clearly every parent knows what their child can/should be able to handle. Still, I biked home after this movie and I’ll have to admit, I felt a little nervous on the streets with dim streetlights and lots of shadows.
