Crafty Halloween Costumes for the Not-So-Crafty Mama

check out the punk rockerMy son needed a new helmet for bike/ skateboard riding so we made our way to the local Wal-Mart last night to check out their selection. He asked to go look at the Halloween costumes, as he’s still undecided about what he’ll dress up as this year. For all of those who wonder why they begin putting Halloween costumes out in the Summer- it’s because of my son. He literally starts planning (and talking about) what he’ll be the next year right after Halloween is over. The items can’t get into the stores fast enough for him. And each time we step foot into a store with anything Halloween related, the “what should I be this year” conversation starts all over again. It’s exhausting!

Normally, I suck it up and spend $25-$30 on his costume, but I’ve had it this year. They get worn once, they’re cheap and really quite ugly looking. And I’m not about to buy a really expensive one that looks somewhat decent. This year, I thought I would be bold and a bit old-school about Halloween- why not just make the darn costumes myself?

The one he liked last night was a punk rocker. Cool. Something a little different than what I thought he’d pick, especially after our last conversation of going back to the “classic costumes” of vampires and zombies. I broached the idea of making one for him- he didn’t seem to put out or embarrassed by the idea- and started to ramble off some ideas about how I could put together a cool punk rocker outfit. But ladies, now that I’ve spoken what I’ve been thinking, I’m kinda scared. You see, I know I’ve mentioned it before, I’m not crafty. I’m really impatient and it usually shows in my attempts at being crafty. Can you help? Have any ideas on how to make a punk rock costume that’s easy enough for a three year old craft skill level (cause that’s where I’m at, people)!

And I need some ideas for some easy to make toddler costumes as well. What are your kids going to be? Share with me so that I can steal your wonderful, creative ideas!

  1. My 1 yr old son is going to be a pirate. I ended up buying a costume at Old Navy just because it was so cute and also on sale, but the original plan was a bandanna around his head, a cheap eye patch, some striped pants that he already owns, and a white onesie. Easy and cheap.

  2. My 2 yr old will be a skunk…b/c I think it is cute as all get out. I got it at Old Navy.

But last year he was a cowboy, kinda like Woody from Toy Story. I got his outfit at Once Upon a Child for all of $4 and it was from Gap. Just an idea if you run out of patience with making a costume. MIght not work for the older kid since he has a preference but for the younger who would wear whatever you put her in it should work.

Punk rocker though, hmmm I have to think back to that ear and get back with you. :)
