The Christmas List is Ready, Mom
An email came to me yesterday from a mom of two kids. She has concerns about some of the items that her two boys are wanting for Christmas this year. Here’s what she wrote:
Hello,
I have a question that your readers may be able to help me out with regarding Christmas presents for my kids. I have two sons, a 9 year old and a 7 year old, who have some really expensive items on their Christmas wish list this year. They both want an IPod and my older son wants a phone and a computer, among several other items that are a little more reasonable.
I remember wanting my own radio as a kid, which I actually received for Christmas when I was 8. It was the best present ever and I want my kids to experience that same joy without handing them items that will just be lost or broken a couple of weeks after Christmas. I know that IPods and MP3′s have replaced the boom boxes from my days. As much as I want them to have access to their own music, I’m really concerned about them taking care of these expensive items. They’re so small and easily lost.
As for the computer and phone, they both seem almost necessary these days, but I’m not sure of the right age for kids to start getting these items for their very own. I can’t say I didn’t see this coming this year since he’s been bugging me for a hone since he was 6 years old. I’m hoping that there are some other experienced moms who can tell me how their kids have handled these items. Are there rules that go along with kids getting more expensive items or is there a magic age when the kids automatically start taking care of their belongings without a rigid rule system. And what brand IPod or MP3 is recommended for durability for kid-usage?
I didn’t realize Christmas shopping would be this difficult for my older boys!
