Park Rate Increase

A couple of times per year, we load the two dogs and kids into the car and head out to Emma Long Park. It’s located just off of 2222 and 360- City Park Road, to be exact. It’s close enough to town to make it an easy trip but far enough out to make you feel like you’ve escaped to someplace far away. It’s a gorgeous drive and the park is nicely kept with bathrooms, barbecue pits and picnic benches. We last went a couple of months ago and payed $8 to get in. Not bad for some good old-fashioned family entertainment.

But beware, the next time you and your family head out to an area park, you may end up paying a higher rate for a day of family fun. If you plan on visiting any parks along the Highland Lakes and Lower Colorado River, expect to pay a little more beginning on February 1, 2009. From LCRA’s press release:

“Recreation areas will continue to be priced differently from developed parks. LCRA entry fees are $5 per vehicle for recreation areas and $4 per person for developed parks, which have more amenities. Children under the age of 13 can enter free, and senior citizens are $2 per person. Daily campsite fees range from $10 to $25, depending on the level of services and utilities, and cabins and group pavilions can be rented at some LCRA parks. LCRA also sells discount passbooks for park entry and equestrian fees.

If you plan on visiting one of the 206 parks located in the city of Austin, not all are parks where you have to pay to get in. And, if you do have to pay, the fee is typically only $5 per carload on Monday- Thursday and $8 per carload Friday- Sunday or on holidays. The City of Austin Parks and Recreation site also has a mapping tool on their website to help you locate the nearest park.
