She Said, She Saw: Java Dive
On what I’m sure was one of the last wintry weather type days in Austin, I found myself on a little road trip adventure to meet with Bonnie Berry for coffee at a cafe called Java Dive. It was a cold and rainy 43 degree morning- a perfect day to sit and sip on coffee.
Java Dive was recommended to me by a LiveMom reader. Since I’d never been there before, I decided that it was time I take a drive to Lakeway to check it out. It’s a local coffee shop, owned by a husband and wife who live in Austin. They serve organic food that is all made in-house. In fact, it’s probably the most organic coffee shop I’ve ever seen. They even roast their own coffee!
When walking in, my first thought was to head straight to the case with the baked goods. Sure, there’s a lot more to look at- an area to the right that is set up like a mini organic grocery store, nice plants adorned with decorated eggs hanging by strings to remind us that Easter is near. But I have a one track mind… I went straight to where the goodies were. There was a really large selection of baked goods that are all made by a staff pastry chef- not a typical coffee shop with only a handful of items. I almost instantly spotted a lone blueberry muffin that was calling my name, while, simultaneously, my daughter spotted a gingerbread cookie that was waiting just for her. It didn’t seem to take us long to find something tasty!
I ordered a basic coffee and a cup of steamed milk for my two year old who has grown accustomed to this steamed milk routine at home. The owner asked if I wanted a steamel (steamed milk with flavored syrup) and I quickly agreed, anxious myself to try it. The coffee was good, the muffin even better! The steamel found its way all over my daughter’s face… I’m pretty sure she liked it. The prices, for everything being organic, were very reasonable. I think we paid a little under $10 for two drinks and two treats.
We made our way to a table in a room that has a train table set up for the kids. Not really a whole lot of selection of toys, but as there were only our two kids in the place at the time, it seemed like enough, especially since my daughter wouldn’t leave my side! The owners will be adding more toys and books- they have a two year old and understand the importance of keeping kids entertained while the parents have time to relax! All in all, the kids were happy, the moms were sated and happy as well. The only downside is that this place is so far from where I live. It took me about 45 minutes from Pflugerville. While I won’t be going there as often as I would if it were closer to home, I will be waiting anxiously for the days when they start serving brunch on Sunday… coming soon, I’m told!
Java Dive is certainly no dive. It’s a nice, clean environment that’s family friendly. They serve up food that makes me want to come back to try more. The muffin I had totally blew my diet, but it was so worth it. Check it out if you happen to be in Lakeway, or if you want to take a little road trip adventure yourself, you won’t be disappointed.
