Plastic Underwear Covers

My two-and-a half year old is potty trained and seldom has an accident, even during the night-time. I’ve had it in the back of my head that we were close to running out of pull-ups, which is what she has been wearing at nigh-time for the occasional accident. So, when I pulled open the drawer after her bath last night to take one out, I found it to be empty. I crossed my fingers, checked to make sure the leak proof mattress cover was on her bed and slipped a pair of big girl undies onto her. I told her that she was wearing underwear instead of a night-night diaper and so we made an extra trip to the potty.

She was dry this morning and that’s inspired me to not buy any more pull-ups, as they really have been a complete waste of money. What I would like to buy are some of those old-timey plastic covers that go over the underwear- you know, like the ones you used to wear when you were a kid. Do they work? If so, why can’t I find them anywhere? Is there a better alternative to buying diapers for the rare accident that you’ve had success with for keeping the sheets dry at night? If you know of anything that works or where I can get ahold of some of those plastic undie covers, let me know.

Not that we are planning on traveling on another airplane for a few months, but what do you do when your potty-trained toddler is afraid of the toilets on the airplane? Luckily, we had a pull-up in her carry-on bag and just slipped it on her whenever we realized that there was no way she was going on that scary toilet. Somehow, she managed to hold it until we landed (yes, I was proud… beaming with joy that she could hold it for so long). Our next planned trip is a long one; we’ll be flying to Germany for Christmas and I’m already stressing about how to handle that, especially since we won’t be using pull-ups at all by then. Advice?

  1. When Ailane was potty-training, I couldn’t find those plastic covers either. I ended up buying the swim diaper covers, that kind of look like undies or bloomers, at Target. She walked around with sharks and fish on her booty for a while, but it did the trick.

  2. Target has the cheap plastic ones you just have to search however google Little Beetle training pants. They are this nice Velour material but are like big kid underwear. They are super cute. My son loves them.

  3. I found the plastic covers at babies r us. I think I’ve seen them at Wal Mart too. They make platic covers w/ the thick potty training panties built into the covers. Kinda like a cloth all-in-one diaper. I saw those at BRU too. I never used the built in ones, so I couldn’t tell you if they work well or not, but they seem like they would.

  4. First off, congrats on the early potty training! Since I have all boys, I don’t even get to begin the potty training until 2 1/2.

I have some of those plastic underwear (never used them) if you’d like them.

Thanks, Ladies! I completely blanked out while packing for our road trip this week. While staying at a lake house, I realized that I should have brought something just in case of a night time accident… wouldn’t want that to happen in someone else’s bed! Luckily my friend who was staying with us lent me a couple of pull-ups from that she brought for her daughter (no, Luci ended up not needing them, but still…).

Anyway, I happened to find the plastic undie covers at a K-mart in Williamsburg, Virginia. Last night was the first night we used them and they make a loud noise everytime she moves… none of us got any sleep until I pulled them off in the middle of the night. So, looks like I will be trying the Little Beetle ones out!

  6. My potty training days are long past but I wish I could have tried out Antsy Pants. I always thought someone should invent cloth/re-usable pull ups. The website makes them look pretty promising. I would love to hear from someone who has tried them. They look really innovative. http://getantsy.com/

  7. The little beatles are great but expensive! We have ONE for son and it is cute. It won’t hold everything in but it is pretty absorbent. You could get a cloth diaper cover. Same idea as the plastic pants you mentioned but not as loud and as bulky.
