The Weekenders: Events for Austin Families, July 17-19, 2009

The Music Man- The 51st Annual Zilker Summer Musical is back! The Music Man follows fast-talking traveling salesman, Harold Hill, as he cons the people of River City, Iowa into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys’ band he vows to organize – this despite the fact he doesn’t know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian the librarian, who transforms him into a respectable citizen by curtain’s fall. Friday, Saturday and Sunday at approximately 8:30pm. FREE!! Parking, $3 per car. Beverly S. Sheffield Zilker Hillside Theatre, across from Barton Springs Pool in Zilker Park.

Music Under the Star- Bring your lawn chairs, blankets and your entire family for FREE live music, food from Rudy’s Bar-B-Q, Mighty Fine Burgers, Blue Bell Ice Cream and Sweet Leaf Teas- while supplies last. The popular summer concert series for Austin families is back for four Fridays in July. This Friday’s performance is by Toni Price. Friday, 6:00- 9:00pm. Museum admission is free and parking is free during this period. The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, 1800 N. Congress Ave. 

Summer Musical: Seusical- Seussical is a family event that is put on by the Art, Band, Choral, Dance, Orchestra and Theatre students of AISD. Friday, 7:00pm; Saturday, 2:30pm and 7:00pm. $10 Students, $15 adults. Stephen F. Austin High School, 1715 W. Cesar Chavez.

BookKids Storytime- A special storytime with local storyteller, Maureen Haskell, who is sure to tell silly stories about the importance of being green. Skits, songs and stories included! FREE!! Saturday, 11:30am. BookPeople, 603 N. Lamar Blvd.

Splash Party Movie Night- Every Saturday night during the summer enjoy a movie while splashing in the spring-fed pool at Deep Eddy. This week’s movie is Journey to the Center of the Earth (in 3D). Saturday, beginning at dusk. Concessions are available. Movies are free with regular pool admission. Deep Eddy, 401 Deep Eddy Ave.

Tortuga del Mar- Come out and enjoy a puppet show by Literature Live! Mayan goddess Ixchel watches over two baby sea turtles on their journey across the ocean. They encounter all the enchantment and mystery the ocean holds. Recommended for ages 5 and up. FREE!! Open to the public. Saturday, 2:00pm. Faulk Central Library, 800 Guadalupe Street.

Round Rock Concert Series- Enjoy live music by the Marshall Ford Swing Band for FREE!! Bring a blanket or lawn chairs, coolers are allowed as long as there is no glass. Pets are also welcome but must be kept on a leash. Saturday, 7:00- 9:00pm. Round Rock Ampitheatre, behind the Baca Center at 301 W. Bagdad.

Stories From Our Shores- Come on a journey to far away lands, and revisit lands near and dear with storyteller Elida Bonet.  Become spell bound as she weaves a tapestry of colorful folktales and true life stories based on the theme of immigration.  Elida Bonet has been a storyteller for over 12 years at schools, libraries, festivals and universities. Saturday, 2:00 and 3:00. Free with museum admission. The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, 1800 N. Congress Ave. 

Sunday Morning Kids Show- Featuring the new Book for Kids: A New Day is Dawning for our Earth. Be Groovy, Be Green! Lanelle Drawn by Dottie Shackelford Hemming. Come hear the stories of Lanelle and her Friends! Written and told by Maureen Haskell. Sunday, 10:30- 11:30am. Ruta Maya Coffee Shop, 3601 S. Congress Ave.

Hartman Foundation Concerts in the Park- Pack a picnic, bring the entire family and your friends to listen to FREE music by different ensembles of the Austin Symphony. This week’s feature is large string ensemble. Sunday, 7:30pm. Hartman Concert Park in front of the Long Center City Terrace, 701 W. Riverside Dr.
