The Weekenders: Events for Austin Families, August 14-16, 2009

Movies in the Park- Bring a blanket or lawn chairs and enjoy watching the movie Igor in the park. FREE!! Pre-show activities begin at 7:30 with the movie beginning at dusk. Old Settlers Park, 3300 E. Palm Valley, Round Rock.

Live Music on the Patio- Enjoy live music Friday, Saturday and Sunday out on the patio while the kids play on the playscape! FREE!! Shows begin at 6:30 until 9:00pm. Central Market, North Lamar.

End of Construction Party- Come out to tour the newly renovated Wheatsville Co-op and enjoy free samples from local Austin food producers, a Kids’ Zone with face painting, Austin Green Art and Urban Roots and a special performance by Laura Freeman (at 2:00pm), live music and more! Tours are every hour on the hour. FREE!! Saturday from Noon- 4:00pm. Wheatsville Food Co-op, 3101 Guadalupe.

Book Box Storytime- Each Saturday, a guest will sing songs, read stories and then wrap it all up with a fun arts & craft project! FREE!! Saturday at Noon. Beth’s Book Box, 15803 Windermere Dr., Pflugerville.

The Music Man- The 51st Annual Zilker Summer Musical is back! The Music Man follows fast-talking traveling salesman, Harold Hill, as he cons the people of River City, Iowa into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys’ band he vows to organize – this despite the fact he doesn’t know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian the librarian, who transforms him into a respectable citizen by curtain’s fall. This is last weekend to see it! Butterfly Storytime- Enjoy a reading of The Very Hungry Caterpillar and other stories as this week marks the beginning of the Monarch Butterfly’s Fall migration. FREE!! Saturday, 11:30am. BookPeople, 603 N. Lamar Blvd.

Austin Ice Cream Festival- Enjoy a day of games, contests, live entertainment including performances by Mr. Leebot and the Hey Lollies, and ice cream, of course!  Saturday, 10:00am- 7:00pm. Tickets, $5 per person, kids under 12 are free. Waterloo Park, 1301 Trinity Street.

Family Yoga- Enjoy a FREE yoga session with Cindy for kids and adults, with purchase from the cafe. Saturday, 10:00- 11:00am. Ruta Maya Coffee Shop, 3601 S. Congress Ave.

Space Ship Saturdays- Blast off to Planet Polka Dot! Come out to watch Laura Freeman perform with her band the Hey Lollies. FREE!! Saturday,10:00am. Flipnotics, 1601 Barton Springs Rd.

Round Rock Concert Series- Enjoy live music by Paul Eason in this final show of the 2009 summer season. FREE!! Bring a blanket or lawn chairs, coolers are allowed as long as there is no glass. Hartman Foundation Concerts in the Park- Pack a picnic, bring the entire family and your friends to listen to FREE music by different ensembles of the Austin Symphony. This week’s feature is Woodwinds/ Brass Ensemble. Sunday, 7:30pm. Hartman Concert Park in front of the Long Center City Terrace, 701 W. Riverside Dr.

Science Sunday- Find out what it’s like to be a veterinarian and work with animals that are scaly, furry, with four legs or no legs! Vets will be on hand with live animals to give you the scoop on how they work to make animals’ lives better. Learn about pet care, exotic animals and careers in veterinary science and find out just how similar we are to our animal relatives! This week’s theme is Dogs & Cats.
