A Day in the Life Giveaway: The Lakeway Resort and Spa

*Read all the way to the bottom of this post for details on how you can win a free two-night stay with breakfast included!

The group of ladies who contribute to this site are willing to give their time (many times completely unpaid) to build a better community for us by sharing ideas, resources, thoughts, opinions and more. I often try to let them know just how thankful I am to them for helping me out, but I don’t know if they ever really get just how much I appreciate all of their hard work and devotion. A few months ago, I came up with the idea to take them on a weekend retreat somewhere– a place where we could escape from the binds that tie us to our kids and responsibilities for just a couple of days, a place where we could relax, bond, have some laughs and a good time.

I contacted the Lakeway Resort and Spa to see if they would be interested in hosting us for a weekend in January and they agreed almost immediately. We would have two days, two nights, plush beds, glasses of wine and cocktails, excellent food, friendly staff and the spa. Oh, the spa! And so we packed our bags this past weekend and headed out to Lakeway for some real retreating. We had a full but relaxing weekend ahead of us with a chef prepared tasting (check back on Thursday to read all about this experience), spa treatments at the San Saba Spa, strategic planning and a little bit of wine drinking without having to chase down a bunch of kids.

I thought I would share some photos and what the LiveMom writers thought about the retreat.

Nicole: I kept repeating it again and again in my head. “I am going on a spa weekend.” It’s as if I didn’t really believe it. I had never done anything like this, and what a treat after you are a parent! But it just happened. Just the drive out to Lakeway Resort and Spa was beautiful. I left when my husband got home from work on a Friday, which meant I was driving west as the sun was setting. Wow. I loved the fact that although we would be a “world away”, we were really only 45 minutes away from home.

We were lucky to have a balcony which looked out onto the lake, so I appreciated the lights outside our window on the other side of the lake as I relaxed in my comfy bed, which I had ALL to myself. No snoring husband, no child to wake me up in the middle of the night with some request or to hop into bed and kick me for several sleepless hours. I relished sleeping in!

We met up at the Travis Restaurant for breakfast. The restaurant was my first chance to see the view into the pools and the amazing view of the lake. We had the buffet breakfast, which offered a lot of choices — the regular cereal, eggs, bacon, and sausage, but also some really nice fruit and pastries. I confess – I went back for seconds.

The kids pool area looked really cool. A beach entry and a huge water slide would definitely be something my four year old would be thrilled to see. We quickly noticed the swim up bar (!) and Jennifer noticed a great use of space — there was an individual lap lane which I would really have enjoyed in warmer weather. Lastly, we resolved to come back out in the evening and find out how to get the fire pit going.

After we finished brainstorming about the future of LiveMom — on the patio watching the sun set, no less — we got ready for dinner. I knew the chef had prepared a special dinner for us and I was really looking forward to it. When we arrived, though, we were shocked. We had our own table with place settings telling us what we would be trying. Although the chef advised us to save room for the next courses, I couldn’t help myself and almost had to be wheeled out of there. Although the restaurant was full, the chef still took the time to check in with us between each plate and get our feedback.

After dinner, we did indeed make it to the fire pit and got to listen to music from the wedding which was wrapping up. Although it was a but chilly, we enjoyed time to digest and chat before heading back to our rooms. After another great sleep and room service (!), we packed up to head home (sniff, sniff!). What a great mix of relaxation, “work”, and time spent with friends.

Shannon: I enjoyed the view, the plush beds, the food, the fun company and the venue … but the spa really took the cake. A serene, lovely space, it really shone when combined with the outstanding services. I had a fantastic massage followed by a great pedicure, but the icing on the cake was relaxing in the lounge before and between services, drinking tea and watching sailboats on the lake, and then hanging out in the sauna afterwards. I took it even farther, showering and getting dressed leisurely, waiting as long as I could to turn in that warm, comfortable robe. The spa staff, who were knowledgeable and helpful when I signed in, didn’t bat an eye when I checked out after my lengthy stay. The spa was a little slice of heaven.

The view from the spa.

Speaking of staff, I have to say that every single interaction I had with the people who work there was pleasant and helpful. From the front desk clerk who found us forgotten toiletries to the guy who drives the golf cart and took us on a hilarious, impromptu tour of the property, everyone was friendly.

I would definitely like to return, especially in summer with my family in tow. The pool looks like such a fun place to beat the heat! But I enjoyed the peaceful wintertime vibe as well, perfect for our getaway sans children this weekend.

Katie: The resort is perched right above the lake making for a gorgeous, peaceful setting, which feels much further removed than a mere 16 miles from downtown Austin. As soon as I arrived I knew it was going to be a great weekend.

The beds were seriously comfortable and included four, that is right four, cloud-like pillows. WiFi, a nice work space, a flat screen and a reading chair by the windows rounded off a very nice space.

The infinity edge pool looked amazing. I will definitely have to return for a stay with the family this summer to make use of the pool with its swim up bar and grill. The whole area is just so serene.

The lakeside Back Porch Bar offered a great, quiet patio to enjoy a few drinks, discuss some LiveMom business, and watch a beautiful sunset over the lake.

That evening we were in for a real treat at our “Chef’s Tasting” dinner at Josey’s Grill and Bar where Chef Jeff Axline truly outdid himself. We were given the opportunity to try some of the cuisine to be included in the new menu; it was excellent. Three appetizers, an entrée, and dessert gave us a chance to see what the chef would be bringing to the menu. I would definitely make the drive from home to have the cheddar biscuits slathered in bacon jam, the scrumptious crab cakes, and what has to be the most tender Filet Mignon I have ever eaten.

It was hard to head out Sunday morning and go back to real life after the star treatment we received all weekend. Everyone on staff was eager and genuinely happy to help, making the stay that much better. If you have ever wanted to get away to a beautiful, waterfront resort with all the amenities, but want to stay close to home, this is the place. Thanks to everyone at Lakeway Resort for taking such good care of us and to Chef Jeff for the incredible food. I am definitely heading back soon!
