Oktoberfest in Austin
The weather is cooler. The nights are longer. It can only mean one thing: Oktoberfest! Since it’s not practical to load the family onto the next flight out to Munich, we are planning on partaking in Texas-style Oktoberfest celebrations happening in the area. Here are a few that we will be hitting up.
- Fredericksburg- October 5-7, 2012 Oompah at its best. German music, food and drink, arts and crafts, children’s area and family fun. Oktoberfest is a colorful, festive celebration of Fredericksburg, Texas’ German heritage. Oktoberfest has become an annual tradition around the world. Oktoberfest is a community event of family entertainment featuring three stages of continuous oompah music, art & crafts, Children’s fun area ~ Kinder Park, a German Bier Tent, and Oktoberfest Vineyard area, OkTUBAfest, Chicken Dance Around the Square, Domino Tournament, delicious food and lots of cold drinks … all weekend long! Admission: $6 Adults, $1 children ages 6-12, free for children under 6. 2-day passes are $10 and three day passes are $15. - Wurstfest- November 2-11, 2012. A unique celebration rich in German culture and full of Texas fun located in beautiful New Braunfels, Texas! Enjoy good fun, food, special events and the finest in Alpine and Bavarian Style Entertainment. Admission: There is an admission charge to enter the grounds that includes access to all entertainment areas. Children 12 and under are always admitted free. Hours: Wurstfest opens on weekdays at 5 pm, and Saturdays and Sundays at 11 am. Wurstfest closes at 12 Midnight on Thursday and Fridays, 10 pm Sunday through Wednesday, and 1 am on Saturdays and at 10 pm on the last Sunday. Location: 120 Landa Street, New Braunfels. - German-Texan Heritage Society- Saturday, October 6, 2012. A full day of family fun, German food & drink, music, dancing and lots of children’s activities. Music by the Siekers, the polkadillos, Otto & Friends and more! Hours: 11:00am- 7:00pm. Admission: Adults, $10; Children under 12 are free. - Walburg German Restaurant- September 28- November 3, 2012( Fridays and Saturdays).Enjoy the outdoor birgarten with live music every weekend with two bands performing outside under the tent and one band inside the restaurant! There is an indoor arcade for the kids, lots of dancing under the tent, German food and a large German beer selection. Admission: FREE! Hours: The biergarten opens at 6:00- 11:00pm. While all of the events above are kid-friendly, there is one event that is happening this weekend that is NOT kid-friendly. But hey, if you can get a babysitter, the event below would be a great way to celebrate Oktoberfest and Texas Beers!
Texas Craft Brewer’s Festival- Saturday, October 6, 2012. The largest annual celebration of Texas craft beer, this non-profit outdoor festival features the best Texas-brewed beer and ale (plus non-alcoholic options), a commemorative tasting glass, live music, local food vendors, beer educational sessions, food and beer pairings, and a good time to be had by all at a beautiful venue on the banks of the Colorado River. Admission: $20 General admission in advance, $25 at the door; Designated Driver $10 at the door. Hours: 2:00- 8:00pm. Location: Fiesta Gardens, 2100 Jesse E. Segovia Street.
