2ND STREET DISTRICT GIVES BACK AND SPREADS THE HOLIDAY CHEER FOR THIRD ANNUAL HOLIDAY WINDOW WALK
Local businesses in the 2nd Street District (2SD) are spreading holiday cheer throughout the district by transforming their storefront windows into elaborate art installations, created by local students, for the 3rd Annual Holiday Window Walk, starting November 29. The 2SD Holiday Window Walk is an annual competition open to theatrical design students from St. Edward’s University and Texas State University, where 2SD businesses let their storefront windows become the students’ canvases for an opportunity to win collegiate scholarships.
“Thirteen 2ndStreet District retailers are giving up their most valued marketing assets, their windows, by graciously hosting student designs in their storefronts for the third year in a row,” says Julie Sutton, 2nd Street District’s marketing manager. “This project is what the 2nd Street District is about – giving back to our community. We are sharing the magic of the season with Austin residents and visitors while also providing scholarship to the talented young artists from area universities. A beautiful side effect is that we are managing to nurture a whimsical small-town tradition in the fastest growing city in the nation.”
The competition, hosted by 2SD and supported by generous scholarship donations from the Downtown Austin Alliance, gives participating students widespread exposure, an incredible portfolio showpiece and the chance to win $2,500, $1,500 or $1,000 in scholarships.
2SD encourages all of Austin to take a stroll and visit the elaborate art installations, as they will be featured in over 13 storefront windows from November 29 to January 1. With this year’s design theme is “Classic Movies”, shoppers will see a variety of classic blockbusters like The Wizard of Oz at Con’ Olio and Singin’ In The Rain at Milk & Honey. On Saturday, December 14, the winning design will be announced during the “Deck the District”event from 1pm to 6pm, where window walkers can enjoy carolers and an appearance by the one and only Santa Claus.
