Here at LiveMom, we love meeting new moms (and dads) doing interesting things around town. Our monthly Feature series give us an excuse to learn more about these hardworking Austinites like this month’s special subject, Adriana Cantu.
Adriana and I met at a Straight No Chaser event for bloggers at the Palmer Events Center downtown, and I was immediately drawn to her bubbly personality and infectious smile. She had her photo taken with the Tom Selleck portrait on the wall and I thought, “She is definitely my people.”
Funny, smart, and savvy, Adriana posts vlogs, cooking tips with a toddler, recipes, crafts, and amusing stories to her site. If you live in Austin with little ones, her site, Jack’s Mom in Austin, is a must-read.
Thanks to Howdy Honda for supporting local mamas by sponsoring our monthly Local Mama Feature series.
LiveMom: How long have you lived in Austin, and what brought you here?
Adriana: I’ve lived here off and on for 15 years; my family migrated here fro the Rio Grande Valley when I graduated from high school. I think it might be a cultural thing because we all happened to live on the same block for almost a decade, and now we live in different parts of Austin and the surrounding smaller cities.
LiveMom: How many kids do you have, and what are their ages?
Adriana: I have a 3-year-old son and a baby due in June.
LiveMom: What is your idea of a perfect day with the family in Austin?
Adriana: We are a family that loves a good farmer’s market and live music. So I guess a morning at a farmer’s market that happens to have great live music, then home for a leisure nap, followed by an afternoon of baking together. We also really love baking.
LiveMom: If you had 24 hours to yourself in Austin, how would you spend it?
Adriana: I love books and reading so I’d spend a day hanging out at local book stores and enjoying some great cafes and checking out the bibliophile scene.
LiveMom: What do you like best about Austin? What would you change, if you could?
Adriana: I like that Austin is a great place for families in that it provides so much opportunity for learning and engaging; however, I do find that it lacks in diversity and the parts that are slightly diverse are currently being gentrified. If I could change anything I’d make Austin a central hub of diversity and culture.
LiveMom: What’s one piece of unsolicited advice you’d give to a new mom?
Adriana: You’re going to mess up and the world will not end when you do – we all do it and we all survive.
LiveMom: What is the best thing one mom can do for another?
Adriana: Listen and be supportive even when you don’t agree with parenting style or with what’s going on – we’re all here to figure it out so just listen.
LiveMom: What kind of music do you like? Any local musicians? Kids musicians?
Adriana: I’m a musical junkie. I’m also a huge fan of classical and musical scores. It’s mostly stuff I have to listen to on my own save for the musicals – I’ve accidentally made my 3 year old a fan of musicals from listening to them non-stop while he was in utero and during his first year of life. As for local musicians, we love a ton but none that I can name. We love watching live shows whenever we can. As for kids’ musicians, we’re huge fans of Staci Gray and Joe McDermott.
LiveMom: What’s the best way to keep up with what you are up to next?
Adriana: Honestly, my Facebook blog page. The point of my blog is to invite other parents to join in on projects, events, and even just baking with us on a daily basis so if you want to know what I’m doing – check there.
LiveMom: What might we be surprised to learn about you?
Adriana: I feel like I’m pretty typical. I don’t know that anything I do is really surprising. Perhaps that I’m very literal? I think that people think that because I’m friendly and run a blog that encourages socializing that I wouldn’t be naturally dry and very literal. I function mostly off logic and sometimes I surprise even myself when I realize that I’m raising tiny people. I have to remind myself that they are far from logical.
LiveMom: What is your job, what is your title, and what do you love about your job?
Adriana: I work part-time for Austin Community College in the Arts and Humanities Department doing a ton of miscellaneous things as well as writing for the dean. I love that everyone there is pretty vocal about everything. I don’t talk a lot; I usually try and listen before saying much so I like that I can enjoy great and intelligent conversation without anyone asking for my input. I’m also a freelance writer and blogger.
LiveMom: Do you have any charitable organizations you like to work with/ donate to/ volunteer for locally?
Adriana: Planned Parenthood. I haven’t volunteered for them in a long time, I used to a lot when I was younger. Now I just donate when I can.
LiveMom: What is your secret talent?
Adriana: I don’t know that this is a talent but I retain information very easily and while I hate to admit it, I’m very good at mimicking creativity once you show me how to do it once. Unfortunately, it doesn’t come to me naturally.
Any social media links or sites you want to promote?
Adriana: I have quite a few parenting sites but in order to prevent saturating the article with web addresses I’ll promote my blog and Facebook page, Jack’s Mom In Austin. If anyone has any questions or you’re in need of resources of any kind, please ask me. I love finding information.
