For the first time on November 24, Austin Lyric Opera will offer opera-loving parents a chance to enjoy the Sunday matinee performance of Verdi’s Don Carlo while their children enjoy an afternoon of music, games, arts and fun.
The Sunday Matinee Music Camp pilot program will be led by teachers from Armstrong Community Music School and will provide cultural enrichment for children ages 5 to 12. Kids will make instruments, participate in music lessons, dress up in historical costumes, and more. Snacks will also be provided. A limited number of spots for the camp are available.
“We know there are lots of parents who would love to take advantage of more cultural offerings but are hindered by the concerns of child care,” says Joe Specter, ALO General Director and father of two young children. “Sunday Matinee Music Camp is not just baby-sitting, it’s a real cultural and musical experience kids will enjoy.”
Specter continues, “We’re grateful to our partners at Armstrong Community School who will bring their musical and educational expertise to the kids in Sunday Matinee Music Camp. Austin Lyric Opera hopes to make opera a great experience for the whole family.”
Parents are asked to purchase their tickets by phone and reserve spots for Sunday Matinee Music Camp concurrently. ALO will accept reservations for any children aged 5 to 12 years old for $20 a child.
At check-in, located at the Long Center’s AT&T Education Room, parents will sign waivers and leave their cell phone numbers and seat numbers with Matinee Music Camp teachers. The parents registered for Sunday Matinee Music Camp will be offered special aisle seating for easy out access.
Tickets for Don Carlo are on sale now. With a wide range of options – from $24 to $200, as well as a lower-priced student ticket – a memorable experience at the opera can be had by all.
