One of our favorite local non-profits, Little Helping Hands, is “turning” 5 in June and celebrating by issuing a Summer Volunteer-a-Thon Challenge. The organization is encouraging Austin kids to spend their summertime making our city a better place. Parents can sign kids up to receive a tracking sheet for the activities they complete between June 1st and August 31st and turn it in to earn prizes and recognition during Little Helping Hands’ annual volunteer appreciation party on September 7th at West Lake Beach.
Participants can log their time through Little Helping Hands activities or through work with other organizations, schools, churches, synagogues and other family volunteering activities. There is even a list on the organization’s website to give your little do gooders some ideas on where to start.
For those of you who might be spending more time ordering items online during the summer, you may also want to check out AmazonSmile, which allows you to designate 0.5% of the purchase price of eligible items to a charity of your choice — at no cost to you. On your first visit, you can designate a charity, and eligible products are marked “Eligible for AmazonSmile donation” on the product page. You just need to make sure to go to smile.amazon.com from the web browser on your computer or mobile device. Cool, huh?
Are you planning to do some volunteer work over the summer? What is your favorite way to volunteer as a family?
