indie meme family films
Last year, at about this time, we introduced you to Indie Meme, a local film production company founded by Alka Bhanot and dedicated to promoting independent films from South Asia. Last year, Alka brought Kaphal to Austin, which was awarded the Golden Elephant Prize for Best Director at the Indian Children’s Film Festival and recognized as Best Children’s Film in the 61st National Indian Film Awards.

Indie Meme is bringing three films to the big screen at Austin’s Southwest Theaters – Lake Creek this September:

Pappu, a young boy from a lower middle class family living in scenic Manali, felt fortunate enough to get admitted in the prestigious school of his town. But his excitement proved to be short-lived as he started having adjustment issues in his new school. His rich classmates made fun of his humble background and looked down upon the innovative toys and gadgets that he made from waste with the help of his jobless engineer father. The child continued to suffer silently until one day when he came face to face with a genie in his tree house. Genie had some magical powers at his disposal! Pappu feels that all his troubles are going to be over now, but the genie tells him  that magic is not something permanent and Pappu should work hard. Pappu realizes there are no shortcuts to happiness and he identifies his own strength. Papua Ki Pugdandi is an adventurous, magical and logical journey that thrills.

Pappu Ki Pugandi will be followed by the short film Life, which deals with the idea of how technology takes over our lives.

For Sid Sharma, life has not quite worked out the way he planned. A thirty-something disillusioned architect struggling to save his failing marriage, Sid stumbles through his days on a self-destructive path while holding his wife’s beloved cat hostage. Meanwhile Ashok, Sid’s estranged and widowed
father living in Boston, decides to make a last-minute trip to LA for an academic conference. When Ashok arrives at Sid’s doorstep unannounced, the two men begin a journey to mend their strained relationship until Sid discovers the true purpose behind his father’s visit – a woman with whom he had an affair years ago. Starring Sendhil Ramamurthy, Roshan Seth, Academy Award winner Mary Steenburgen, Justin Bartha, and Academy Award nominated Michael Lerner, Brahmin Bulls is a heartfelt and humorous look at the ever-evolving relationship between a father and son, the women in their lives, and the powerful secrets they keep. Goopi and Bagha are two wise fools. One lives to sing and the other to play the drum. Despite their acute ineptness, their passion for music knows no bounds. When the villagers cannot bear to listen to them anymore, both are banished to the same forest. Here, Goopi and Bagha encounter each other and their fates become entwined for life. A strong and immediate bond is forged by the two hapless souls, both in search of connoisseurs of their musical craft.

They sing and play together to celebrate their newfound friendship, only to be surrounded by melancholic ghosts who they manage to enchant with their peculiar musical talent. As a gift, they acquire four blessings from the king of ghosts. Using these, they can always be well fed, transport themselves anywhere in an instant and mesmerize anyone with their music, albeit only together and in ‘jugalbandi’. One blessing is still owed to them, which will be granted by the ghost king when they need to use it.
