How do you talk to your kids about weighty subjects? Chances are, through stories.
The Scottish Rite Theater‘s latest production, Pancho Rabbit and the Coyote, tells the story of a family which is separated when drought forces Papá Rabbit North for work. When the family patriarch doesn’t return when expected, his eldest son, Pancho, decides to go in search of him. On the way, a coyote offers to help him, which turns into more of a threat on what turns into a perilous journey. On one level, the play is similar to a fable, but on another, Pancho Rabbit tells the story of the dangerous journey undocumented immigrants make to reach the United States.
Pancho and the Rabbit was adapted for the stage exclusively for the Scottish Rite. The book on which it was based, written by Duncan Tonatiuh, won several awards, including Pura Belpré Author and Illustrator Honor, Kirkus Best Books of 2013, Best Multicultural Children’s Books 2013 and Notable Children’s Books from ALSC 2014. Scottish Rite partnered with master teacher Caroline Sweet to produce a teaching guide to complement the performance.
