Have a story to tell about motherhood? LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER is an annual event which happens in cities across the country with the aim of taking the audience on a well-crafted journey that celebrates and validates mothering through giving voice to motherhood–in all of its complexity, diversity, and humor. Listen to Your Mother aims to support motherhood creatively through artistic expression, and also financially–through contributions to non-profit organizations supporting families in need.
Austin is one of the 39 cities which will host a Listen to Your Mother show in 2015. Mark your calendars now for this year’s show:
Listen to Your Mother Austin
Date: Saturday, April 25, 2015
Time: 3 p.m. & 7 p.m.
Location: AT&T Executive Education and Conference Center,
1900 University Avenue
Austin, TX 78705
Submissions for the fifth annual Listen to Your Mother Austin show are open until February 8 at 11:59pm. But what to write about? As Kristin, the event co-producer, explains on the website, “Maybe it’s a story of being a mom, not being a mom, having a mom, losing a mom, finding a mom, or becoming a mom or a parent–the true story that only you can tell. The main theme of your piece must have something to do with motherhood, but you do not have to be a mother (or a professional writer!) to submit an essay. Read this post the Chicago team wrote last year about the non-mom perspective.” I’ve had several friends who have submitted and presented at shows in the past, and they have all looked upon it as an amazing and transformative experience. And the event itself is so uplifting, touching, funny and moving — much like motherhood.
Here are a few tips from the producers (check here for all the producers’ wise guidance):
- Each essay must be 5 minutes or less when read aloud. This is approximately 2-3 pages, depending on content and speaking style. Please note that all essays are subject to light editing, for time or other reasons if eventually selected for our show.
- Pieces should not be memorized. We read directly from the page on show day.
- ONLY ONE SUBMISSION PER PERSON. If you can’t decide between two, please don’t send both; ask someone close to you to help decide on ONE before emailing us.
Submit at this link. You will receive a confirmation of receipt within 24 hours. Invitations to audition will be sent on or before February 20. Auditions will take place March 1, 2 and 3.
If you are considering submitting, we are crossing our fingers for you! We can’t wait for the show!
