Here at LiveMom, we love meeting new moms (and dads) doing interesting things around town. Our monthly feature series give us an excuse to learn more about these hard-working Austinites! This month, we’re featuring local morning news anchor, Yvonne Nava. Thanks to Howdy Honda for supporting local mamas by sponsoring our monthly Local Mama Feature series.
LM: How long have you lived in Austin, and what brought you here?
Yvonne: I moved back to Austin a little over four years ago when I got a job at KVUE-TV.
LM: How many kids do you have, and what are their ages?
Yvonne: I am a proud mommy to two darling and daring boys. Bodhi is 2 (the terrible twos are real and in effect) and Liam is 6.
LM: What is your job, what is your title, and what do you love most about your job?
Yvonne: I am the morning anchor for KVUE News Daybreak. You can catch me on ABC every weekday morning from 4:30 to 7 a.m. My job is exciting because no two days are alike. I truly feel privileged to help people start their day. They roll out of bed, turn on their televisions and “boom” there I am in their living rooms bright and early! We try and provide people with the news of the day while hoping to add in a little bit of fun/humor as well. After all, who doesn’t love to laugh?!
LM: What does a typical work day look like for you? Do you have any tips on balancing work and motherhood?
Yvonne: I wake up at 2:20 every morning and hop into the shower. I am a complete zombie until I get that morning shower underway. I head off to work about 30 minutes later and once I arrive, it’s straight to the computer. Our producers are busy overnight helping write stories and researching. We look over our newscasts together, I make some changes and then it’s onto the makeup room. Much to my chagrin, there is no glam squad. I do my own hair and makeup. But I have it down to a science and I’m sitting at that anchor desk by 4:27 a.m. sharp.
LM: What do you like most about Austin, and what would you change if you could?
Yvonne: My career has taken me to many different places. I’ve lived in San Angelo, Lubbock, Knoxville, Miami and Hartford. But I would pick Austin above them all. The city is so vibrant, the people are kind and the weather is amazing. It’s just a perfect balance. If I could change one thing (in a perfect world) I’d fix our city’s affordability issues. The prices of homes in Austin are outrageous. If I could change anything else, it would be to get rid of all the cedar trees (my allergies are brutal)!
LM: What is the best thing one mom can do for another?
Yvonne: I love it when moms are honest and vulnerable. It puts me at ease and makes me feel human. Some days, I feel like super mom. I’ve got the job down pat. Other days, I’m struggling and lucky if I don’t pick up my kid at school in pajamas!
LM: What is your idea of a perfect day with the family in Austin?
Yvonne: A perfect day for me and my family is simple. We are together, laughing and there are no meltdowns! Doesn’t matter the location.
LM: If you had 24 hours to yourself in Austin, how would you spend it?
Yvonne: I’d spend the first couple of hours at a spa getting a mani/pedi and a relaxing massage. But soon after that I’d miss my husband and kids so we’d all spend the rest of the day together. We would probably go to the Zilker Botanical Gardens or the Texas Memorial Museum at UT for the dinosaur exhibit. For lunch, there’s an amazing little place called Elizabeth Street Cafe. And my kids love being outdoors so a walk in the Greenbelt is a must!
LM: What kind of music do you like? Any local musicians? Kids musicians?
Yvonne: I honestly like all types of music. Everything from hip hop to classic rock to country. When it comes to pop or dance music, Kidz Bop is the way to go. All the lyrics or innuendos are cleaned up and rated G.
LM: What might we be surprised to learn about you?
Yvonne: I love to bake. I got it from my mom who’s unbelievably talented! Nothing relaxes me more than finding a new recipe and trying it out. Tres leches cake and banana bread are my old standbys. But I am always up for a challenge. And my 6 year old is the best sous chef around!
LM: Do you have any charitable organizations you like to work with/ donate to/ volunteer for locally? Go Red For Women movement. I’ve worked with Komen Austin and I love spending time mentoring young girls with the Girls Empowerment Network of Austin, or GenAustin.
LM: What is your secret talent?
Yvonne: In my free time I’ve been known to pickup the drumsticks. It’s fun to play the drums and my kids love to dance along. But I think my biggest talent is my ability to craft. I just got a Cricut machine and am currently working on creating my son’s Valentine’s Day cards for his Kindergarten class. You can make everything from cards and gifts to party & home décor with that machine. It’s awesome.
