Spring Break Road Trip Ideas

Spring break is the perfect time to hop into the car for a road trip! The weather is fine – not too hot, not too cold, just right. The great state of Texas is huge and offers many options for exploring new sites and cities. Throughout the years, LiveMom and the crew have taken many easy day trips, and we thought we’d share some of our favorites here in case you need some inspiration on places to drive to in Texas during spring break.

Houston

Just about two and a half hours from Austin, Houston is a great place for families with a fabulous zoo, plenty of museums, great parks and outdoor spaces, and an abundance of amazing food options. Here are just a few ideas of places to visit in Houston:

Houston Zoo

Space Center Houston

Children’s Museum of Houston

Houston Museum of Natural Science

Waco

There’s much to do in this small city located a little over an hour from Austin. Cameron Park Zoo is always a big draw but there are also museums that are well worth your time. And did you know there’s a Mammoth site? You can find some tips and more details in our Road Trip: Waco article.

San Antonio

AdvertisementOne of our favorite day trip destinations from Austin is San Antonio. This fabulous city is only a little over an hour away and is well known for their Riverwalk that runs through downtown and the Alamo. But there’s much more to the city! The Pearl is a destination for foodies, and the DoSeum is a great way to spend the day with kids. You can also visit the many missions of San Antonio that are much less touristy than the Alamo.

Dallas

Like Houston, this thriving metroplex is less than a three hour drive from Austin and has enough family-friendly options to keep you busy for days. Read our Road Trip: Dallas Edition here. There’s much to see at the Perot Museum of Nature and Science.

Bonus if you are heading north: Grapevine Mills, the outlet mall on the way to Dallas, is offering to pay for your gas if you travel 50 miles or more to shop there. To be eligible for Spring for Your Mileage, shoppers ages 18 years or older must provide a valid driver’s license proving that they reside at least 50 miles from Grapevine Mills. They will receive $.50 per mile reimbursement, payable through a Simon Giftcard®. Reimbursement will only be made for the leg of the trip traveling to Grapevine Mills, and the Giftcard® amounts will be rounded up to the nearest $5 dollars with a cap at $100 dollars. The program will be available to the first 50 shoppers, and reimbursement can be retrieved at Simon Guest Services.

Fredericksburg

Visit this old German town and check out all there is to do in the Hill Country. The drive is under two hours and offers lots of wineries along the way in case you need to stock up on some Texas wines! Read Lisa’s family-friendly fun in Fredericksburg recommendations.

On your way to Fredericksburg, stop off at the Hill Country Science Mill in Johnson City. They have special activities planned each day of the week during Spring Break!

Closer to Home

Head out to the Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch or one of the other drive-thru zoos. Explore the beauty of Pedernales State Park or Colorado Bend State Park.

Wherever your Spring Break road trip takes you, we wish you and your family safe travels and fun exploring!
