The Weekender: Events for Austin Families, February 20-21, 2016

Outdoor Adventure Day – 9 a.m. – 2 p.m., Like the first explorers of Texas, we will travel down the Colorado River, navigate through the woods and climb to great heights. Meet at McKinney Roughs for a day of excitement and adventure with a focus on land stewardship. We will get vertical on the rock-climbing wall, enjoy the thrill of a zip line, and work as a team on a raft trip down the Colorado River. Bring a bag lunch and refillable water bottle. Preregistration is required. Adults and children ages 7 and up. Cost: $50 per person. McKinney Roughs Nature Park.

Children’s Book Fair – 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., Meet children’s authors and enjoy children’s activities and learning opportunities. Regular admission prices apply. Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, 4801 La Crosse Blvd.

Michael’s Kids Club: Monogram Clothespin Frame10 a.m. – noon. Let your kids explore their creativity while you shop! Just $2 per child ages 3 and up. All supplies included. All participating Michael’s locations. 

James and the Giant Peach – 11 a.m., When James is sent by his conniving aunts to chop down their old fruit tree, he discovers a magic potion which results in a tremendous peach – and launches a journey of enormous proportions. Suddenly, James finds himself in the center of the gigantic peach among human-sized insects with equally oversized personalities, but after it falls from the tree and rolls into the ocean, the group faces hunger, sharks and plenty of disagreements. Thanks to James’ quick wit and creative thinking, the residents learn to live and work together in this charming family musical. Cost: $26 adults, $23 youth. ZACH Theatre’s Kleburg Stage, 1510 Toomey Road.

Pippi Longstocking – 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., Pippi Longstocking is a scrappy 9-year-old little girl who asks a lot of questions and always put bullies in their place. Along with a horse on the porch, a monkey in the kitchen and her best friends Tommy and Annika, this freckle faced, red-pigtailed, whirlwind of a girl in mismatched stockings is a delight for both children and adults. Tickets: $12 adults, $8 children. Austin Scottish Rite Theater, 207 W. 18th Street.

I’m Not Afraid of the Dark Storytime – 11:30 a.m., Who’s afraid of the dark? Not us at BookKids! Join us for some emphatic proclamations about just how Not Afraid of the Dark we are! We’ll be reading the new book Batman’s Dark Secret and more books about the world at night!  FREE! BookPeople, 603 N. Lamar Blvd.

Celebration of Urban Birds – 1-4 p.m., Avian Invasives Talk by Robin Doughty & Bird Activities including: become a bird at our face painting booth, construct a bird house with recyclable materials; create bird masks & clay bird feeders! FREE! Elisabet Ney Museum, 304 E. 44th Street.Advertisement
Liberty! Equality! and Fireworks! - 2 p.m., Kids and their families can enjoy a special production about Civil Rights, Liberty! Equality! And Fireworks! by Gregory S. Perrin. The play is best suited for children ages eight and up, and their families. The production is FREE and open to the public. LBJ Library Auditorium, 2313 Red River Street.

Flying Theater Machine: Space Academy – 2 p.m., Flying Theater Machine is proud to present Space Academy: a science fiction adventure complete with spaceships and weird aliens. Using suggestions from the audience, the future world of Space Academy is created on the spot by Flying Theater Machine’s kid-approved cast of improvisers. Cost: $5. The Hideout Theatre, 617 Congress Avenue.
