The Weekenders: Events for Austin Families, June 25-27, 2010

Music in the Park- Pack a picnic, bring your lawn chairs and listen to some FREE live music while the kids play on the playscape. This week’s show features The Invincible Czars. Friday, 7:00- 9:00pm. Pfluger Park, 515 City Park Rd.

Splash Party Movie Night: Raiders of the Lost Ark- Float in the spacious spring fed pool, picnic on the lawn, enjoy refreshments from our concession stand and watch a feature film at dusk, every summer Saturday night. Free with pool admission. Deep Eddy Pool, 401 Deep Eddy Ave.

Movies in the Park: The Sandlot- Bring your blankets and lawn chairs as there will be plenty of grass area available. Concessions will be available, but you are welcome to bring a picnic. Glass containers are prohibited. Admission is FREE!! Friday, pre-movie activities begin at 7:00pm and the movie begins at dusk. Elizabeth Milburn Park, 1901 Sun Chase Blvd., Cedar Park.

East End Fourth Fridays- Live music (Malford Milligan), good food, free Live Oak beer, and a kids corner with Hands on Art, a moon walk, free books, and pizza. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs. Admission is FREE until 8:00pm, $7 after. Kids area begins at 6:00pm. Kenny Dorham’s Backyard, 1106 East 11th Street.

Family Fun Nights- Mr. Johnny and Sharon bring you an interactive sound and music show that your children will remember for years! These expert performers have been sharing their talents with children in the Austin area for nearly 20 years, and this time they’re performing at Kaleidoscope for you.Admission is one non-perishable food item per person. Storytime: The Great Fuzz Frenzy- Janet Stevens and Susan Stevens Crummel, award-winning picture-book creators and fuzz fashionistas, present an outlandish adventure about greed, teamwork, and fabulous fuzziness. FREE!! Friday, 7:30pm. Barnes and Noble, La Frontera, Round Rock.

Flipnotics Kid’s Show- Enjoy a FREE performance by Laura Freeman and the Hey Lollies! Saturday, 10:00am. Flipnotics, 1601Barton Springs Rd.

Adventures Away with Kim Lehman-Travel the world by car, airplane, boat, train, and magic carpet with the help of seasoned storyteller Kim Lehman and many well-loved characters! Recommended for ages 5 and up. Saturday, 2:00pm. FREE!! Faulk Central Library, 800 Guadalupe.

Alamo Kids Club- On the last Saturday of every month (and Mondays through Thursdays throughout the summer), the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, the Austin ChronicleAin’t It Cool News and Big Brothers Big Sisters put on free screenings for children. Lowe’s Build and Grow- Build a Monster Truck for FREE!! Lowe’s Build and Grow Clinics are do-it-yourself clinics that are available at all participating Lowe’s locations. You must pre-register online as space is limited. Saturday, 10:00- 11:00am.

Austin Goes Classical Kid’s Show- Enjoy a performance by the Biscuit Brothers with special guests, the LA Guitar Quartet!  For the kids, this will be a special treat in so many ways.  Children’s television stars the Biscuit Brothers will thrill the young ones, plus they’ll get to see the Grammy winning LA Guitar Quartet in a special cameo… and… free Blue Bell Ice cream for all!  All this for just $12 a ticket – open seating. Spanish Language Storytime- Enjoy a FREE bi-lingual storytime at the Wells Branch Community Library. Saturday, 1:00pm. Wells Branch Community Library, 15001 Wells Port Dr.

Dell Children’s Hospital 3rd Birthday Celebration- Enjoy the celebration with cake, crafts, food, live music by Sara Hickman (concert at noon), special appearances by some of your kid’s favorite characters, a StarFlight helicopter liftoff and health and safety information. World Refugee Day- Welcome our newest Texans as part of Austin’s annual commemoration of the United Nations World Refugee Day. The Museum is proud once again to host FREE entertainment and fun in observance of World Refugee Day. The day will begin with a naturalization ceremony for the friends and families of new American citizens-to-be. Then, the celebration continues with FREE activities for the public, including live music and performances, children’s games, food, face painting, a fashion show, and more! Saturday, Noon- 3:00pm. A Family Village Trade-Up- Bring the family, gently used items (toys, clothing, shoes, books, hats) and trade to the next size up! Kids entertainment provided: Carey Youngblood from Music Together followed by Lucinda Clearwater and Shawn Madden. $5 Entry Fee per Family, paid at the Door – part of the proceed and non swapped items will be donated to the Austin Children Shelter.
