The Weekenders: Events for Austin Families, June 4-6, 2010

Friday Family Fun Nights- The summer kick-off event brings Mr. Puppet & Friends, a Professional Ventriloquist, Puppeteer, Humorist & Educator who is in the business of laughter. The young & old and everyone in between will enjoy this fun filled hour. Admission is one non-perishable food item per person. Friday, 6:30pm. Kaleidoscope Toys, 1601 S. IH-35, Round Rock.

Movies in Your Park- Presented by Time Warner Cable. Bring your blankets and chairs to enjoy a FREE screening of “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”. There are pre-movie activities starting at 7:30pm. Enjoy games and trivia hosted by Time Warner Cable. Children can enjoy playing at the playground. Bring a volleyball to play at the nearby courts or another outdoor ball or toy to enjoy prior to the movie. Browse vendor booths about recycling and green initiatives in Round Rock as well. The movie begins at dusk. Old Settlers Park, 3300 Palm Valley Blvd., Round Rock.

Storytime- Enjoy a FREE storytime about adjusting to having a new baby in the house. But I Wanted a Baby Brother will be read at 7:30pm at all participating Barnes and Noble locations.

Ballet Under the Stars- AMDE will be continuing their tradition of sharing an evening of dance under the night time skies with their annual production, Ballet Under the Stars at the Zilker Hillside Theater. FREE!! Friday and Saturday at 8:30pm. Zilker Hillside Theatre, 2201 Barton Springs Rd.

BookKids Storytime- Enjoy a FREE storytime every Saturday at 11:30am! BookPeople, 603 N. Lamar Blvd.

Flipnotics Kid’s Show- Enjoy a FREE performance by Laura Freeman and the Hey Lollies! Saturday, 10:00am. Flipnotics, 1601Barton Springs Rd.

Family Yoga with Cindy- Enjoy a FREE (with purchase from cafe) yoga session for the entire family! Saturday, 10:00-11:00am. Ruta Maya Coffee Shop, 3601 S. Congress Ave.

Crafts for Kids- Bring the kids, ages 3 and up, to make Summer Sunglasses. FREE!! Saturday between 11:00am- 3:00pm. Lakeshore Learning Store, 9828 Great Hills Trail.

Harvest Fest- While you relax in the shade, the kids can do some garden crafts, pet the animals, play games and climb trees. Kids and adventurous adults can try out our new Slackline. There will be b-b-q, ice cream and fresh veggies to purchase. FREE!! you do need to register for tickets. Saturday, 10:00am- Noon. Fizbin Farm, 1630 Elder Hill Rd., Driftwood.

Special Author Appearance- Janice Shefelman’s new book, Anna Maria’s Gift, tells the story of a young girl who is given a violin from her father and lessons from composer Antonio Vivaldi. Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat- The Biblical saga of Joseph and his coat of many colors comes to vibrant life in this delightful musical parable. Joseph, his father’s favorite son, is a boy blessed with prophetic dreams. When he is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and taken to Egypt, Joseph endures a series of adventures in which his spirit and humanity are continually challenged. When news of Joseph’s gift to interpret dreams reaches the Pharaoh (wryly and riotously depicted as Elvis), Joseph is well on his way to becoming second in command. Eventually his brothers, having suffered greatly, unknowingly find themselves groveling at the feet of the brother they betrayed but no longer recognize. Saturday, 2:00pm. Adults, $22. Teen Movie- Teens age 12-17 are invited to watch “The Blind Side” for FREE!! Saturday, 1:00- 3:00pm. Cedar Park Library, 600 N. Bell Blvd.

Family Nature Quest- Come to the park for a fun family hike as a naturalist guides you along one of our many beautiful trails. We’ll bring together a unique blend of natural history to describe how water conservation and land stewardship is vital to the animal, plant and human life along its banks.
After your hike, visit McKinney Roughs’ interactive exhibits and enjoy a nature craft or borrow a trail pack and take the kids outside to enjoy one of our self-guided nature scavenger hunts together. Bring a picnic lunch, and make it a nature day! Pre-registration is recommended for hikes. Hikes are limited to the first 20 participants and are designed to include families with children of all ages. Clubs or groups should schedule a private hike. Saturday, 10:00am- 1:00pm. FREE!! Spanish Language Storytime- Enjoy a FREE bi-lingual storytime at the Wells Branch Community Library. Saturday, 1:00pm. Wells Branch Community Library, 15001 Wells Port Dr.

Cinemagic- Watch “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” for FREE on Saturday at 1:30pm at the Manchaca Road Branch Library, 5500 Manchaca Rd.

TEXplorations Puppet Show: A Taradillo Tale- In celebration of the Museum’s new exhibit Texas Treasure: Inside Our Governor’s Mansion, Austin Public Library’s Literature Live! brings their puppet hilarity to the Museum with A Taradillo Tale. Join Bubba, Lou Ann, and the ‘dillos as they discover a new territory that becomes the Capitol of Texas!After the puppet show, stay and create your own puppets, and complete a fun puzzle to win a prize! Night of the Bat- Enjoy a day of family fun with a matinee of Batman and a guest appearance by Adam West, the original Batman! The Batmobile will be onsite, there will be games for the kids and the band, Band of Heathen will be playing live music! The festival will be held on the Ann W. Richards Congress Ave. Bridge and are FREE to the public. Sunday, 2:00- 10:00pm. Check schedule for locations of activities.

TEXplorations Family Story Time- Features a hands-on activity, stories and more! After Story Time, the Museum’s Exhibits are FREE from 2 – 6 p.m. as part of Wells Fargo First Saturdays.  Visit the Museum’s exhibits during Wells Fargo First Saturdays, and enjoy a special Story Time created for families to enjoy together. Storytime at Mitchie’s- Enjoy a FREE storytime and sign language featuring African-American folktales from 1:00-2:00pm every Saturday. Kids receive free refreshments, a gift and a 30% discount! Mitchie’s Gallery, 7801 N. Lamar Blvd., Bldg. B, Suite 148.

Kid Fish- Each year, the City of Pflugerville partners with the KidFish Foundation, Inc to offer an outdoor fishing opportunity for the youth of our community.  Directed at children under the age of 16, KidFish and Texas Parks and Wildlife stock additional fish in Lake Pflugerville to boost the fishing experience for the event. Saturday, 9:00am- Noon. FREE!! Lake Pflugerville, Weiss Lane and Pflugerville Pkwy., Pflugerville.

Sunday Morning Kid’s Show- This week’s show features Groundworks Music Orchestra! FREE!! Sunday, 10:30am. Ruta Maya Coffee Shop, 3601 S. Congress Avenue.

Storytime- Enjoy a FREE!! storytime on Sunday at 1:00pm at Faulk Central Library, 800 Guadalupe Ave.

Concerts in the Park- Join the Austin Symphony for their annual concert in the park series. Bring a picninc and lawn chairs while enjoying a range of musci from pops to jazz. FREE!! Sunday, 7:30pm. Hartman Concert Park at the Long Center, 701 W.Riverside Dr.
