The Weekenders: Events for Austin Families, October 28-30, 2011

Spooktacular- Get into the spirit of Halloween at the fourth annual Spooktacular! Families can create creepy crafts, enjoy a Spooky Science Extravaganza with Girlstart, win prizes in a “terror-ific” trivia game, and collect take-home treats throughout the evening. At 7 p.m. experience the thrill of juggling, acrobatics, and stage magic with the Clan Tynker Family Circus on the Lone Star Plaza. Wear a costume and participate in the costume parade. Also, explore the Museum’s Exhibits with haunted history tales at 7:30, 8, and 8:30 p.m. This FREE event will be a “Spooktacular!” good time for the whole family. Friday, 6:00- 9:00pm. Trick or Treat Trail and Carnival- Heroes and Villains is this year’s theme! Enjoy a bounce house, candy, popcorn, games and more! $3. Friday, 6:30- 8:30pm. Northwest Recreation Center, 2913 Northland Dr.

Halloween Party at the TownLake Y – On the outdoor fields, you can enjoy free pizza, games, and prizes! You and your friendly Cujo should wear your favorite Halloween costumes.  The Y will be accepting donations for Austin Pets Alive!  So please, stop on by, have fun, and promote a wonderful cause! Friday, 4:00 – 6:00pm. Town Lake Y. 1100 West Cesar Chavez St.

Boo Bash- FREE Kids’ activities, trick or treating, Disney characters on parade, on Friday from 5:30- 8:00pm. After 8:00, send the kids to FREE babysitting at All Things Kids and enjoy a costume dance party for $40. Friday, beginning at 5:30pm. Georgetown Square.

Beetlejuice Movie Showing- Did you know that Warren Skaaren, for whom our building was named, wrote the scripts for a number of movies including Top Gun, Beetlejuice and Batman?  Join us for a special viewing of Beetlejuice just in time for Halloween and stay tuned for upcoming dates to see additional Skaaren movies. Friday Night Storytime- Join us for a Halloween Party this evening and enjoy The 13 Nights of Halloween by Guy Vasilovich and Little Goblins Ten by Pamela Jane and Jane Manning. Wear your costumes! Scary Stories & Terrifying Tales- The moon is full, spirits are rustling through the leaves along Walnut Creek and our ghouls are ready to welcome you to our popular Halloween event. The Chisholm Trail that runs across Pioneer Farms was never this ghostly. Fun for the whole family. Appropriate for children. Come see our Spooky Scarecrows, haunted historic houses, ghost stories among other family-friendly frights along a walking tour through Hallow’s Eve, with fortune tellers, the Headless Horseman, eerie spooklights and much more. All our historic sites are brimming with spooky characters, many of them storybook characters from the past. When the fog rolls in off the creek, our Tonkawa Encampment is one spooky place. You can almost see ghosts passing through the mist! Experience Halloween like nowhere else in Texas! An Austin tradition with new displays and thrills! Friday and Saturday,  7:00-10:00 p.m. nightly. Boo at the Zoo- Wear a costume, bring a flashlight, pack a picnic! See the animals in a whole new light and meet the ghouls and goblins of the hill country on our one-of-a-kind haunted train ride. It’s the best Halloween treat around! Friday and Saturday from 6:30- 9:00pm. Trains runs every 20 minutes from 7:00 to 8:20.  $12.50 per  person, children under 2 admitted free. Little Red Rocking Hood- Lace up those size 3 Doc Martens and join the Violet Crown Community Theater for Little Red Rocking Hood, a Punk Rock Fairy Tale. This FREE, kid-friendly performance follows the adventures of Riot Grrrl Red as she takes on the Big Bad Wolf in a punk rock battle of the bands. Featuring original music and direction by Toby Marsh. Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Dance Party at Central Market – This is the 4th year that this parade has taken place in the Central Market North park area, and it keeps getting bigger and bigger. Las Monas de San Antonio, a theater group from San Antonio will bring the giant Day of the Dead puppets, and Acadêmicos da Ópera (the Austin Samba School) will bring their Brazilian carnival style percussion ensemble along with the Day of the Dead dancers to create one of the most exciting, incredibly fun family event of the year at Central Market. Don’t miss the Dia de los Muertos parade in the park. DJ Trey Lopaz will be spinning all your Cumbia, Salsa, Son, and spooky soul tunes to keep the spirits lively. FREE!! Saturday, 6:30 – 9:00pm. Halloween at the Y- One of the largest Halloween events throughout Central Texas, this festival will include everything from Carnival Games to Inflatables and Rides to Climbing Walls, FREE Halloween Candy, Music, Prizes, Concessions and more. You also won’t want to miss out on our annual Costume Contest. With admission set at only $5 per person and FREE parking available at the Dell Diamond – what’s not to like? It’s an evening of costumes, fun and excitement that the whole family can enjoy. Farmer Fred’s Fall Festival - All are welcome to join in on FREE activities including 35 carnival games with prizes and candy, a costume contest, the movie Hocus Pocus on the big screen, and more. Fitness Feria-A.I.S.D. invites all parents and students to Fitness Feria, a health fair that will teach parents and students about different sports, physical activities, and how to eat healthier. The event is FREE and for the whole family! There will be 2,000 pay balls given away, instructors and demonstrations from 20+ sports, raffle prizes and more! Saturday, 10:00am- 2:00pm. Farmers’ Market Fall Festival- Our 1st Annual Fall Festival will be an exciting day for the market! Benefiting the Violet Crown Community Theater who will perform the musical “Little Red Rockn’ Hood”. Arbor Day Celebration- Let’s celebrate Arbor Day! Join us for tree-themed kid’s crafts and a terrarium workshop for teens and adults. That’s right, you can walk away with your very own terrarium. Everyone who attends will receive a free redbud seedling. Austin Parks and Recreation’s Urban Forestry experts will be on hand to teach you how to care for your new tree-to-be. The Pumpkin Hunt- Enjoy a  family-friendly event where children of all ages can enjoy fall activities, like picking out a pumpkin from the field. All activities are ongoing throughout the day, allowing families to customize their experience at the farm. Pumpkins of all sizes will be available for purchase. The premier event, the Pumpkin Hunt, includes a wagon ride into the Christmas tree fields where mini pumpkins are hidden in the trees. After the Hunt, enjoy pumpkin painting on the pavilion along with the other activities and games. The following activities are FREE:Wagon ride around the farm, toddler play area, pumpkin decorating (after purchase of pumpkin), bean bag toss, petting zoo, pictures with the pumpkins. Sweet Berry Farm Fall Festival- Head out to the farm for horse rides, mazes, pumpkin decorating, pet the animals,  take a hayride, and you can even stuff your own scarecrow! Plenty of picnic areas available. Admission and parking are free but there are charges for the activities. Saturday, 8:30am- 5:30pm and Sunday from 1:00- 5:00pm. Sweet Berry Farms, Marble Falls.

Ballet Austin’s Peter and the Wolf- Join Ballet Austin as we take children through an interactive balletic version of this Russian fairy tale. Help Peter and his animal friends triumph over the danger in his own backyard. Recommended for children 2 to 8 years old and their family members. Come in your favorite Halloween costume! Austin Pets Alive Fall Festival-Autumn is in the air and APA! is planning a Fall Petsival to cap off the ASPCA Challenge & Save a Life Drive. There will be live music, carnival games, food, drinks, Puppy Poop Bingo, GREAT prizes and it will all be capped off with a FREE showing of Cats & Dogs by the Alamo Rolling Roadshow! Which side will you be rooting for: the cats or the dogs? We have tons of great stuff planned – join us! Also, for those interested in adopting – we will be doing $25 adoptions for all animals at the main facility over 3 months. Goodie bags will be given out with each adoption as well. Flying Theater Machine: Fairly Silly Fairy Tales- Sundays at the Hideout, Flying Theater Machine presents the only kid-oriented improv in Austin. The audience will help us with suggestions and sound effects, and a few lucky kids will even get to join us on stage. Take your favorite stories- shake them up, mix them around, and pour them through a silly filter and what do you have? Fairly Silly Fairy Tales! These are stories like no others because you are helping to create them. In fact, you might even end up in the show! Such a blast for the entire family, but especially for 4-10 years old. Goblins in the Garden-There will be spooky fun activities on the grounds and gardens for all ages to enjoy. Explore the Not-So-Haunted Tower, where Botanica the herbal witch casts her magic plant spells. Follow the clues for the ultimate prize in the Trail-of-Bones scavenger hunt in the gardens. Enjoy balloon artists or get your face painted in the Courtyard. Listen to music by the Chalumeau Clarinet Quartet and enjoy a puppet show and sing-along with Christini and Scotty Roo in the courtyard. Get creative in the Halloween arts ‘n crafts center or visit the bat stations in the Visitors Gallery to learn the truth behind these nocturnal creatures. Families can dress up in their Halloween finest and bring a camera to take memorable snap shots in our Pumpkin Patch. Enjoy goodies from local vendors on the grounds or stop by the Wildflower Center Café for hot chocolate and other seasonal beverages and food. Free candy will be handed out during the festivities and the store will have a free treat for kids 12 and under! From 7 to 7:30 p.m., stretch your legs and practice your best bird call during the Owl Prowl bird walk through the Woodland Trail led by a Center expert. Please bring a flashlight or headlamp for this activity. NEW! At 7:30 p.m., bring your candy, blankets and camping chairs to watch the Alamo Drafthouse’ Rolling Roadshow of “Little Shop of Horrors” in the meadow just outside the Visitors Gallery; entry after 7 p.m. to watch the movie is free or Goblins in the Garden attendees can stick around to participate. Fright at the Museum- Dress up your little goblins and celebrate Halloween at Austin’s very own dinosaur graveyard during Fright at the Museum! Join our spooky scientists in exploring the mysterious side of Texas’ natural history. Feel frightful fish from the ocean depths; be rattled by slithery snakes of Central Texas; and feast your eyes on our bizarre bugs while we serve up creepy, crawly critters for your culinary delight. FREE event for the entire family! This year, we’re out for blood! We’ve partnered with The Blood Center of Central Texas and are hosting a blood drive at the Museum.
