What’s more American than apple pie? Not much, but watermelon is a close second. And here in the heat of July, watermelon is much more appetizing (and hydrating!) as a treat… which is probably why it’s such a staple at 4th of July festivities.
If you want something a little more fun and non-traditional than just a nice hunk of that juicy red fruit (delicious though it may be), I’m right there with you. Let’s get creative with our watermelon, shall we?
Aguas frescas are delicious, fresh, thirst-quenching beverages originally hailing from Latin America, and are traditionally just blended fruit, water and a little lime. We’ve made this one all-American by using watermelon as the centerpiece. Besides, one of the things we love about our country is that it’s a melting pot, right? So happy birthday, America, and drink up!
This Watermelon-Lime Agua Fresca is an amazing summer sipper that even the kids will love (mine did!). If you want to sneak in a little booze, I won’t tell.
Watermelon-Lime Agua Fresca
Serves 4; Recipe lightly adapted from the Kitchn
2 cups seedless watermelon chunks
1 cup cold water
Juice of 2 limes (3-4 oz)
1 tsp light agave nectar
pinch of salt
Combine all ingredients in a blender. Blend until smooth and well combined. Serve over ice, and enjoy!
