Growing up in Austin, live music was a part of my life. From shows at Liberty Lunch to Joe Rockhead (one of Bob Schneider’s early bands) at Steamboat to Little Sister (one of Patrice Pike’s early bands) at the Black Cat, I didn’t realize how lucky I was to have so much music, right in my backyard. I moved away for college and returned back when I was married. Soon afterwards, I had my son. When he was a little baby, I substituted “my” music for Laurie Berkner and other kid musicians.
It wasn’t until my kid was in elementary school that I started to explore the Austin live music scene again. Here at LiveMom, we began to cover Austin City Limits Music Festival. We brought our kids to day shows at SXSW. We started a monthly list of shows coming to town. I set a goal of going to one show a month through our 2014 Austin Bucket Lists. Here were the shows I made it to in 2014 (please pardon the not-so-professional phone pictures):
