Feature: Jennifer Borget, Reporter and Storyteller

Here at LiveMom, we love meeting new moms (and dads) doing interesting things around town. Our monthly Feature series give us an excuse to learn more about these hardworking Austinites.

Many thanks to our Feature sponsor, Varagesale, for shining the spotlight on these local Austin moms and dads. Loved by millions of members across North America, VarageSale is the online marketplace for families to buy and sell with their neighbours. The best part? It’s FREE. If you’re tired of tripping over all those unused toys in your basement, why not sell them on VarageSale? You’ll love how it feels to declutter your home and earn some extra cash while you’re at it. It’s also just the spot to find local deals on clothing, household items and a whole new set of toys for the kids!

I met Jennifer through the Austin bloggers community, and kept seeing her name pop up. She is an active blogger and storyteller at channel 8 in Austin, and she is a big Disney fan. Correction: she is a HUGE Disney fan. If you need tips on visiting the Land of the Mouse, take a look at her blog or Facebook fan page.

Jennifer is also an excellent photographer with an eye for the smallest details, and she captures the moments with her beautiful children in a way that makes the viewer feel as if she is right there with them. Jennifer Borget is a Renaissance woman of many talents.

Borget family sm

LiveMom: How long have you lived in Austin, and what brought you here?

Jennifer Borget: I moved to Austin in 2008 when I was offered a job as a weekend anchor and reporter at News 8 Austin (now known as Time Warner Cable News). My husband and I wanted to move someplace warm and Austin seemed like a warm, fun place!

LiveMom: How many kids do you have, and what are their ages?

Jennifer: We have two kids. A 5-year-old daughter and an almost 3-year-old son.

LiveMom: What is your idea of a perfect day with the family in Austin?

Jennifer: A perfect day for us is enjoying a warm day outside at some of Austin’s parks. My train-loving son is obsessed with the Zilker Zephyr so a stop there to ride and play would be involved.

Dinner would be at either Freddie’s Place or Doc’s Backyard because eating and playing plus a little live music is like a bit of heaven.

LiveMom: If you had 24 hours to yourself in Austin, how would you spend it?

Jennifer: This is tough, because as a busy mom, part of me would just want to sleep and read all day! Maybe sleeping in while reading outside in a kayak on Ladybird Lake. Oh, but I’d also have to toss in a movie at the Alamo Drafthouse.

LiveMom: What do you like best about Austin? What would you change, if you could?

Jennifer: I love so much about Austin: the great weather, the kind people, the delicious BBQ, and family-friendly entertainment. It’s such a wonderful city to live in!

Most definitely the one thing I would change is I-35. I mean, what were they thinking with a 3-lane freeway?

LiveMom: What’s one piece of unsolicited advice you’d give to a new mom?

Jennifer: Don’t get caught up in the drama. The sooner you realize we can all parent differently and still raise awesome kids, the sooner we can all get to supporting one another and making things a little easier for everyone.

LiveMom: What is the best thing one mom can do for another?
AdvertisementJennifer: Ask how we can help. Or better yet… Just help when you see it’s needed. A lot of times moms are too humble to ask for help, but when it’s given without an option, it can make a huge different.

LiveMom: What kind of music do you like? Any local musicians? Kids musicians?

Jennifer: Oh man, when my daughter was young I took her to ACL, the Urban Music festival, and SXSW. My son is more of a free bird who runs away, so we haven’t been out to enjoy much live music the last couple of years. I’m hoping that changes this year because I’d love to take the kids out and discover some new favorite bands.

At home I like to listen to everything. Lately I’m really into classical crossover music.

LiveMom: What’s the best way to keep up with what you are up to next?

Jennifer: Check me out on my blog babymakingmachine.com or Instagram, where I post daily mini blogs about what we’re up to.

LiveMom: What might we be surprised to learn about you?

Jennifer: I’m extremely optimistic. To the point where I’m borderline helpless. For example… I’ve played the lottery once. I went in a pool with some people from work when the jackpot was really huge. I was genuinely SHOCKED when we didn’t win. I was so sure we would. I always expect positive outcomes. I think it’s really helped me in life though.

LiveMom: What is your job, what is your title, and what do you love about your job?

Jennifer: I’m a part-time reporter and fill-in anchor at channel 8, and a blogger. I love sharing other people’s stories at my news station, and sharing my own at home. Storytelling is my favorite part. Photography is also one of my favorite parts about my job because I’m always challenging myself to learn more and do better. I love learning!

LiveMom: Do you have any charitable organizations you like to work with/ donate to/ volunteer for locally?

Jennifer: Partnerships for Children. They’re a nonprofit organization helping foster children in Central Texas. I work with them and feature a different foster child each week who is in need of a forever family and help photograph kids for the Heart Gallery.

LiveMom: What is your secret talent?

I’m an excellent hula hooper.
