Jocelyn Harris-Laffall: Taking Austin, One Brownie at a Time

Here at LiveMom, we love meeting new moms (and dads) doing interesting things around town. Our monthly Feature series give us an excuse to learn more about these hardworking Austinites who make a difference.

This month’s feature is Jocelyn Harris-Leffall, a local baker and chef who recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund her new cooking school. Jocelyn was a special guest at 3 Train Pizzeria recently to offer samples of her (amazing, decadent, giant) chocolate cake and port wine along with dinner. She is a skilled baker, and her bubbly personality is a perfect pairing to her talents.

Thanks to Howdy Honda for supporting local mamas by sponsoring our monthly Local Mama Feature series.

LiveMom: How long have you lived in Austin, and what brought you here?

Jocelyn: I have lived in Austin since 2008. I got a job promotion from the company I was working for at the time.

LiveMom: How many kids do you have, and what are their ages?

Jocelyn: We are a blended family; we have 3 kids. Janae-24, Deja-19, and Maliyah-15

LiveMom: What is your idea of a perfect day with the family in Austin?

Jocelyn: We would wake up and head to the green belt for a hike, then we would head out to Brunch. Next up on the list is a nap. Then we would probably head out to the Domain for our nightly walk; sometimes they have live music, and we would have a seat on the greenery and listen, while the girls go shopping.

LiveMom: If you had 24 hours to yourself in Austin, how would you spend it?

Jocelyn: I would wake up in my own bed with no kids to be responsible for, and step outside to my patio to watch the sunrise in peace. Then I would head to a full-service spa (massage, nails, toes, facial treatments), all while having a great breakfast and lunch in between treatments. Then once I’m done with the spa, I’d have my makeup professionally done and have a stylist dress me for a night on the town with my husband.

LiveMom: What do you like best about Austin? What would you change, if you could?

Jocelyn: I love that there is always something to do for all ages. I would love to see more things places for teenagers to go other than the mall. Would also love to see more business head north and not all downtown.

LiveMom: What’s one piece of unsolicited advice you’d give to a new mom?

Jocelyn: Sleep when the baby is sleeping.

LiveMom: What is the best thing one mom can do for another?

Jocelyn: Support and lift each other up!

LiveMom: What kind of music do you like? Any local musicians? Kids musicians?

Jocelyn: I am lover of all music! I listen to certain types of music at different parts of the day. I have two local artists that I am obsessing over: Tje Austin and Lili Hickman.

LiveMom: What’s the best way to keep up with what you are up to next?Advertisement
Jocelyn: Start here –

LiveMom: What might we be surprised to learn about you?

Jocelyn: I LOVE BROADWAY MUSICALS! I and my daughter Maliyah have a tradition when we are down or just because: we plug in the iPhone and stream Broadway musicals and sing at the top of our lungs and dance around the house or in the car.

LiveMom: What is your job, what is your title, and what do you love about your job?

Jocelyn: My job is chef and owner of a small business called Chef Jocelyn (formerly known as Sugaplump Pastries). Title: Executive Chef and Owner. I love that my job is multi layered; I own an online bakery that serves consumer products and has a wholesale line for business and corporations. I am also in the middle of a Kickstarter campaign that is trying to fund my own facility and open a food school that will service everyone from beginners to advanced cooks and even some kids’ classes.

LiveMom: Do you have any charitable organizations you like to work with/ donate to/ volunteer for locally?

Jocelyn: I do a lot of volunteer work at my daughter’s high school – I work in the front office doing whatever they need me to. I am also the current Vice President of the Anderson High School Girls Soccer Booster Club, which is all run by volunteers.

LiveMom: What is your secret talent?

Jocelyn: I am a bit of a comic!
