Play at Zilker Park

June Summer Fun Checklist Item: Play at Zilker Park

Zilker Park is sometimes referred to as Austin’s own Central Park, and for good reason. The park is actually several parks in one, since it includes Barton Springs and has Zilker Botanical Gardens, the Austin Nature and Science Center, the Zilker Hillside Theatre and the Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum just adjacent. Thanks to an investment by C3, the organizers of the Austin City Limits Music Festival, the grass on the Great Lawn is a stunning green.

The options for play at Zilker are almost endless: climb on the large, multi-age playscape, explore the hike and bike trails surrounding the park, throw a football or Frisbee on the Great Lawn, scale “Rock Island” (the limestone outcropping in the middle of the Great Lawn), test out your sand volleyball skills, try disc golf, bring your pooch to splash at the spillway (aka “Free Barton Springs”) and skip rocks down by the water.

Starting March 28, 2015 through Labor Day (September 7, 2015), a $5 parking fee is charged on weekends (Saturday and Sunday), holidays, and special events. Normal collection times are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and for special events from 3 to 8 p.m. If you don’t mind walking, you can see if there are any spots in the parking lot under Mopac.
