The Weekenders: Events for Austin Families, February 12-14, 2010

Second Saturdays are for Families- Make your very own letterpress print using woodblocks and a hands-on letterpress machine with travelling printmakers Drive by Press. Be inspired by the art and music posters in American Letterpress: The Art of the Hatch Show Print, then drop into the Community Room and create! $7 for the whole family; $5 member families. Funny Little Valentines Storytime- A celebration of all things heart shaped and loving. They will read My Heart is a Zoo. There will be heart-shaped snacks and an opportunity for making handmade valentines. FREE!! Saturday, 11:30am. Book People, 603 N. Lamar Blvd.

Celebrate Me!- Celebrate Me! is a cultural exploration event held at the Carver to appreciate the diverse cultures that make up our world. During our ‘journey’ visitors will admire African art, sample cuisine, join a drumming circle, and dance! Activities for youth and adults will provide a thoroughly cultural and educational experience that will enlighten visitors about Nigerian life. FREE!! Saturday, 1:00- 4:00pm. Flipnotics Kid’s Show- Enjoy a FREE performance by Laura Freeman and the Hey Lollies! Saturday, 10:00am. Flipnotics, 1601Barton Springs Rd.

Mr. Tamarin’s Trees- Presented by Literature Live! Find out what happens when Mr. Tamarin takes matters into his own hands after one too many trees drops leaves all over his tidy yard. This puppet show is presented as part of the Library’s Leaf for a Leaf program, and will  follow the dedication of a tree in memory of Sandy Sturgeon. Saturday, 2:00pm. FREE!! Lowe’s Build and Grow- A FREE hands-on clinic that is for kids of all ages! This weekend’s project will be to build a Jewelry Box. All participants will also receive a free apron, badge, certificate and goggle! Register online to reserve a spot. Saturday, 10:00- 11:00am. All participating Lowe’s locations.

Darwin Day- a FREE, family-friendly event celebrating the 201st anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth and the 151st anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of Species. There will be face painting, digging in the fossil pit, crafts, interactive booths and even a birthday cake! Saturday, 10:00am- 2:00pm. Texas Memorial Museum, 2400 Trinity St. Located on the UT campus in the exhibit hall of the Texas Natural Science Center.

Valentine Salsa Dance and Family Pot-Luck- This Valentine, Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance will once again celebrate love and family with a Salsa Dance in the tradition of the old-fashioned Pot-Luck, Family Parties. Find those “dress up” clothes you never get to wear anymore, and bring the kids! In the spirit of sharing, please bring a main dish, finger food, or dessert to share to the this (non-alcoholic) family-friendly event. FREE!! Open to the public. Saturday, 7:00- 10:00pm. Book Box Storytime- Each Saturday, a guest will sing songs, read stories and then wrap it all up with a fun arts & craft project This week’s storytime is a special Valentine’s Day one! FREE!! Saturday at Noon. Beth’s Book Box, 15803 Windermere Dr., Pflugerville.

Engineering Extravaganza- Join us for a two-day celebration of everything engineering! We’re kicking off National Engineers Week with community partners who will share their expertise and enthusiasm with Museum families through plenty of hands-on activities. Saturday and Sunday, 10:00am- 4:00pm. First 400 kids get in free on Saturday, thanks to the Austin Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Otherwise, admission is $6.50- $4.50. University students will lead activities on Sunday during Student Engineers Day. Austin Children’s Museum, 201 Colorado Ave.

Storytime at the Library- Enjoy a FREE storytime. Sunday, 1:00pm. Faulk Central Library, 800 Guadalupe.

Sunday Morning Kid’s Show- Big Don is Don Robinson, an award winning and accomplished Hip Hop musician who contributed to the soundtrack for Spy Kids. Big Don brings high energy and positive stories and music in a hip and danceable style. FREE!! Sunday, 10:30am. Ruta Maya Coffee Shop, 3601 S. Congress Avenue.
