The Weekenders: Events for Austin Families, May 24-27, 2013

Movie in the Park– Friday, May 24, 2013,  8pm. Dittmar Recreation Center will be showing Finding Nemo in the park as a kick off to summer. Come spend the beginning of your Memorial Day weekend with us at this great family and community event! The movie is free and food vendors will be parked on the field to tickle your tastebuds. Alamo Kids Club–  Saturday, May 25, 2013 at 11 a.m. Ain’t It Cool, Austin Chronicle, and Toy Joy present an absolutely FREE 35mm screening of the classic film Forbidden Planet (1956). Seating is first come, first served, so be sure to arrive early. Children 3 and up will be allowed only with a parent or guardian. No children under the age of 3 will be allowed and families with loud children will be asked to leave. Alamo Drafthouse The Ritz, 320 E. 6th Street.

Spy Camp– Saturday, May 25 at 3pm. Train to be a secret agent at our exclusive Spy Camp! Entry will require fingerprinting and creating a secret code name. Your spy skills will be tested as you maneuver a “laser” maze and work together to complete a secret mission. Once completed, you will receive a special spy certificate. Ages 3+. FREE!! Simon Kidgits Club Safe Summer Event– Saturday, May 25, Noon- 4pm. Our biggest Kidgits event of the year is back! Join us as we visit with law enforcement professionals from the Austin area to learn how they work to keep us safe. Participants include the Austin Police Department Explorer Unit, the Lake Patrol jetskis, the K9 unit dogs and handlers, the Air Operations helicopter, and more! Kidgits members who attend can also learn about the dangers of drunk driving with the Star Cart demonstration and make a free child ID kit. Hill Country Galleria Saturday Night Concert Series– Saturday, May 24 from 7:00- 9:00pm. Listen to FREE live music by Hot Texas Swing Band. Hill Country Galleria, 12700 Hill Country Blvd.

Shoal Creek Fest– Saturday, May 25, 10am- 6pm. Gather with your friends to enjoy live music, crafts, activities for the kids, flea market shopping, food and drinks and more! FREE admission. Shoal Crossing Event Center, 8611 Mopac, Access Road NB.

Close Assault: 1944–  Saturday, May 25 or Sunday, May 26, 2013, 11am and 2pm. Watch a FREE World War II battle reenactment and living history program. Austin Federation of Musician Music Series– Sunday, May 25 from 6:00- 8:30pm. The Museum is once again bringing live music to the Lone Star Plaza. In collaboration with the Austin Federation of Musicians, this FREE Spring concert series will feature some of Austin’s finest musical acts. This week’s performers are Denny Freeman’s Trio, Rick McRae Quintet and Huston-Tillotson Choir . Doors at 5:30pm. Bring chairs and picnics, no alcohol. Bullock Museum, 1800 N. Congress.

Sunday Morning Kids’ Show– Sunday, May 26, from 11am- noon. Join children’s entertainer Staci Gray for live music and bubbles galore! NATY guests can bring the family (including pets) to hear the music while enjoying a variety of trailer food, covered seating, and a playground for the kids. There’s plenty of parking, too. FREE!! 15th Annual Free Memorial Day Concert and Sing-Along- Monday, May 27, 2013, from noon – 1 p.m. The concert features the A Cappella Texas chorus and chapter quartets, singing songs of inspiration and patriotism, as well as other musical numbers, honoring the memory of America’s war dead. The audience will be invited to join in on a few songs. Be sure to bring the children to this moving event. Capitol Rotunda, 11th & Congress Ave. Austin.

Central Market North Lamar– Live music and dancing, oh my!  This is a great spot for parents to enjoy music while letting their kids burn some energy on the playground.  There are also ducks to feed in the nearby pond.  Fridays and Saturdays from 6:30- 9:00pm. Central Market, North Lamar Blvd.

Food-Free Family Storytime-The Round Rock Public Library presents Food-Free Family Storytime, a reading activity that welcomes families with children of all ages to a fun environment that’s safe for individuals affected by food allergies.This interactive program includes a variety of activities such as books, fingerplays, music, movies, and puppets. FREE!! BookKids Storytime– Join the wonderful staff at BookPeople as they entertain your kiddos with stories, crafts, guest storytellers, and sometimes even puppets! Saturday mornings at 11:30am. FREE!! BookPeople, 603 N. Lamar Blvd.

What’s the Story Steve?– Move Your Tale and ColdTowne Theater collaborate to present this fully improvised theatrical journey through a story of the audience’s making. Featuring Steve the improvising poodle, a portion of the show follows Steve through an original tale. Pay what you wish. Appropriate for audiences of all ages. A return to MYT’s classic event structure, kids will join us on the stage for the entire event, providing sound effects, characters and settings for for every story. Flying Theater Machine: GryffinPuffleClawsin Sundays at the Hideout, Flying Theater Machine presents kid-oriented improv right here in Austin.
